A documentary film: Live From Tokyo – Tapping Into the Tokyo Music Underground!

Date: October 29, 2010
Venue: Asia Sociey (NY)
Presented by Asia Society and New York-Tokyo

Text by Jim Hoey

What first caught my eye about the film Live From Tokyo was the mention of these obscure Japanese bands that most people I meet from Japan have never heard of: Kirihito, the Boredoms (or one of their side projects) or eX-girl. Float these names to your average Japanese visitor in New York and you get a blank stare or some polite response, just like if an American visits Tokyo and some crazed Japanese music-obsessive with a knowledge of enough English starts to ask questions about Lightning Bolt, Sonic Youth, Fugazi, the Minutemen, or Faith No More. The average guy on vacation is just like, “Sorry man, I don’t know those bands”. And if you meet someone who DOES, and YOU are the obsessive, you have an instant connection and end up in a long conversation about what’s new and on the way up, and you feel good exchanging information that has yet to permeate the further layers of the cultural experience elsewhere in the world.

Dana Leong… the “hi-def Yo-Yo Ma”!!

Text by Sohrab Saadat Ladjevardi

Dana Leong………”a musician in New York City who plays the cello and trombone. Rocks out. Lives good. Works harder.”

An Asian-American artist of Chinese and Japanese descent, Dana studied both classical cello and jazz trombone on double scholarships at Manhattan School of Music. As an official Yamaha artist, Dana gives clinics and workshops around the globe on the use of electronics with cello and trombone, and his unique genre-bending composition techniques.
Dana Leong doesn’t care about music genres. He just fuses hip-hop, jazz and electronics to create a genre less sound. Being often called the “hi-def Yo-Yo Ma,” Dana’s radical fusion of electronic music and ethereal jazz sensualities has earned him critical acclaim and excited audiences around the world. He has worked with top artists, such as Dafnis Prieto, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Wynton Marsalis, Yoko Ono, and Kanye West, to name a few.

Jeff Greene captures the essence of the Azerbaijan psyche: the Azeri Mugham!

Text and photos by Jeff Greene

Baku, modern and ancient

The city of Baku, the capitol of Azerbaijan, located below the Caucasus Mountains on the edge of the Caspian Sea, is a fascinating blend of east and west, old and new. In the late 1800s, numerous “oil barons’ mansions” were built alongside the existing ancient Islamic walled city in a strange mixture of architectural styles that mixed European classical, Art Nouveau with Persian eclecticism. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union 20 years ago, Baku has experienced another oil-fueled building boom of modern skyscrapers. But nothing seems to capture the essence of the Azerbaijan psyche the way that traditional Mugham music does.
