Dickie Betts (ex Allman Brothers Band): A Retrospective.

Text and photo by Dawoud Kringle

The southern part of the United States gave birth to many rock & roll pioneers such as Bo DiddleyElvis PresleyLittle RichardBuddy Holly and Jerry Lee Lewis; all of whom defined rock & roll. When one thinks of Southern Rock, the works of groups such as the Outlaws, Ozark Mountain DaredevilsZZ TopElvin Bishop, 38 SpecialMolly HatchetBlackfoot, and others inevitably come to mind. But the genre of Southern Rock owes its existence to the Allman Brothers Band. Since their debut in 1969, the group’s work single handedly defined a distinctively American music.

Duane Betts with Dickey Betts

Their original line up consisted of Duane Allman (guitar), Greg Allman (keyboards), Barry Oakley (bass), Butch Trucks (drums), Jai Johanson (drums), and Dickie Betts (guitar). They gained national notoriety with the 1971 release of their live album At the Fillmore. The album and the live performance it documented became legendary. Their effortless blend of rock, blues, and country with jazz inspired extended improvisation forged the group’s sound and legacy.

Date: May 30, 2012
Venue: Carnegie Hall
Concert review by Dawoud Kringle

Sometimes great music just falls into your lap. The founder and editor of DooBeeDooBeeDoo called me at the last minute and asked if I would review a recital at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Hall. This was somewhat inconvenient for me, as I had an early performance of my own that day. But, I agreed. After my own performance on a pleasant summer evening, I ran home, dropped off my instruments and headed for the legendary venue to listen to a pianist I’d never heard of.

That pianist is Jeremy Siskind.

Review by Jim Hoey

Sunday, May 20, 2012 – On this bright Sunday, I found myself slipping into Le Poisson Rouge and down their steps for a matinee performance by New York’s Gamelan Dharma Swara group. The space was dark, set up with chairs for the sit-down lunch crowd, and the stage was curiously lined with the golden-hued gamelan instruments including the metallophones (gambang, slenthem, saron, gender), gongs, and other percussion instruments (like the kettle-like kenang and bonang) of the Balinese art form that predates the arrival of Hindu and Buddhist culture on the islands of Indonesia.

Recommended event: FIGMENT NYC on Governor’s Island featuring Jason Candler’s installation

Text by Jason Candler

in so many words is an 18 ½ hour time capsule of news radio, composed entirely of unedited sound bites, devoid of any newscasters, commentators, editorials or analysts (and is commercial free!).  it sequentially covers the time period of the last Presidential Election, and the first hundred days of the Obama Presidency (May 12, 2008 to May 12, 2009).  The edited result unfolds a mind-opening non sequitur narrative that informs you about the city, country, and world we live in, the scope of news reporting, the connections seemingly different stories have with each other, and how you relate to this reality.  The longer you listen, the more the puzzle pieces fall into place.

to commemorate the 4 year anniversary of when i started the project, i have posted here the first month of the story, which covers May 12 – June 12, 2008. (listen to soundfile here)
