On Sunday, May 17th, 2015, the Whynot Jazz Room hosted a marvelous evening of music which was curated by Andrea Wolper and part of the Why Not Experiment? Series.
The evening started with the duo of Vinny Golia (woodwinds), and Ken Filiano (bass).

On a beautiful evening, the first Sunday of May 2015, The Subtle Realms Trio was scheduled to perform at the Skinny, a bar on the Lower East Side. The Subtle Realms Trio is Dan Kurfirst (drums, percussion), Ben Cohen (saxophones), and Will McEvoy (bass). A new project started by Kurfirst in the early part of 2015, Subtle Realms evidently seeks a more sublime musical element to build from.

Black Cube SP “Return of the Tides” tour came to NYC on Tuesday, April 14th to celebrate the release of their debut CD Return of the Tides: Ascension Suite & Holy Ghost. Led by Chicago’s Rob Mazurek (cornet, electronics,) the band includes Brasil’s Guilherme Granado (keyboards, electronics, sampler), Mauricio Takara (percussion, cavaquino, electronics), and Thomas Rohrer (rabeca, soprano saxophone). Black Cube SP is Rob Mazurek’s newest ensemble which features his long standing São Paulo Underground trio with the addition of Thomas Rohrer.

From the opening notes of I’m In, trombonist, composer, bandleader Joe Fiedler, bassist Rob Jost and drummer Michael Sarin make it clear that this is going to be an adventurous, imaginative, funky and fun listen. Fiedler’s new recording, the fourth from his trio, and the second album on his label, Multiphonics Music, presents a departure from his previous trio sessions, as Fiedler set out to play tunes with more traditional jazz forms, and that possessed more blues elements. With I’m In Fiedler has once again used his curious mind and explorer’s heart to great advantage, finding brilliant new approaches on his horn, and new heights of mastery with his composer’s pen. – all about jazz
