The Persian Arts Festival begins with theatrical performance “Our Sweet Life by the Pacific Ocean,” produced by NYC’s Noor Theater, featuring Academy Award nominated actress Shohreh Aghdashloo and playwright Houshang Touzie. This incredible act will be followed by a musical performance byPersian folk and Sufi singer, Amir Vahab, a reading by Richard Jeffrey Newman from his latest work, a translation of the epic Shahnameh, and ending the evening will be a film/music montage set to the psychedelic Persian folk and funk music of the 60’s and 70’s from the critically acclaimed Pomegranates compilation.

Throughout the evening, musical accoutrement’s provided by DJ Payam, who willspin Persiansoundscapes and attendees will also have access to this year’s visual art exhibition, curated by PAF Art Director, Pooneh Maghazehe: a PAF-original “Haftseen.” This showcases the Seven S’s, a collection of artwork that interprets the symbols typically shown on a traditional Norooz table setting that correspond to seven creations and sacred immortals protecting them.
“Norooz”, literally translated as “New Day” in Farsi, is a holiday celebrated around the Spring Equinox by Persians, Kurds, Turks, Afghans, Tajiks, Parsis, and other ethnic communities. In 2006, when PAF first entered the scene with its inaugural multi-media festival, the impact on the community was established when Mayor Bloomberg declared a City of New York Proclamation announcing March 19th as the official “Norooz” NYC holiday and acknowledged the Persian Arts Festival’s commitment to promoting the Persian culture’s captivating arts and traditions.
