Future Of Music Coalition: SPECIAL ARTIST EMPOWERMENT EDITION, April 15, 2014

Future Of Music CollectiveText by Future Of Music Coalition

Hey gang, Casey from Future of Music Coalition here. I don’t always write to you personally, but I wanted to fill you in on an exciting project from FMC and our friends at CASH Music that YOU can help make happen.

It’s all about making sure you have the tools you need to do business on YOUR terms in today’s competitive music marketplace.

How many of you had pages on the original MySpace? How many of you were disappointed when the company was sold to Rupert Murdoch and it was transformed into a user-unfriendly wasteland of corporate advertising?

And how do you feel about the recent changes to Facebook, which make it more difficult to interact with fans who have already signed up for your pages?

Are you annoyed when a useful tool for musicians gets bought by a bigger company whose agenda might not be aligned with your interests? Or when a great platform gets sold for scraps?

As creators and indie label owners who depend on these technologies to do business, we feel your pain. But we’re not just sitting on the sidelines griping – we’re doing something about it.

FMC supports technologies that musicians can use that are built to last. That’s why we’ve partnered with CASH Music on a proposal to promote sustainable digital tools that musicians and other creators can freely use, customize and build upon.

We see this as consistent with our core mission and values: to empower musicians in a legitimate digital marketplace built on choice and flexibility. It’s not much different from when FMC co-founders and bandmates Jenny Toomey and Kristin Thomson published The Mechanics Guide to putting out a record back in the early 1990s. By getting information out to the people, Jenny and Kristin helped tons of independent labels get off the ground. In joining forces with the proudly nonprofit developers at CASH Music, we proudly carry on this tradition.

Now we need your help. Don’t worry, it’s easy: go to our project page, check out what we’re doing, CLICK APPLAUSE and leave feedback. That’s it!

By doing so, you are leading the way and making the case that YOUR needs as a creator are every bit as important as the giant tech and media companies. Make it so!

Yours in Music,
Casey Rae
