Categories cannot contain Shinji Masuko. He’s the founder of DMBQ – one of Japan’s greatest modern psychedelic bands, a respected music and comic reviewer, an astonishing guitarist and a master guitar builder. He’s also been a member of the Boredoms since 2004, having designed and built their notorious seven neck guitar (the Sevena) while acting as the band’s principle guitarist.

Prolific Japanese-born, current NYC resident, pianist-singer-songwriter Akiko Yano has released 29 original albums. While producing Yano’s album in 2007, T Bone Burnett brought Marc Ribot on board, who is one of the top US guitarists. Since then, Yano has found great joy of playing with Ribot. He has participated Yano’s Japan tour for previous three years.

This reintroduction to these legendary ‘90s metalheads is actually somewhat timely, as their noisy slop-punk sometimes feels like what you might get if Nathan Williams of Wavves turned in through Ozzy Osbourne’s perpetual revolving door for guitarists. And when the band is less controlled, it almost seems like frontman Page Hamilton is trying to trap Sonic Youth’s chaos inside cages shaped like stoner metal riffs, still a winning formula even when he can’t fully contain it.

Abdou Mbaya who lives in Paris is one of the new coming singers from Senegal  fusing Mbalakh with rhythms of  Jazz, Beat, Rock and Raggae… He sings in Wolof and reminds you a little bit of Youssou N’Dour.

High Priest of the Antipop Consortium presents: Black Goliath, a night of electronic beat-driven compositions featuring Aaron Burnett (saxophonist) Public Enemy frontman and icon “Chuck D” spoke of assembling his dream band via samples. With my latest pieces I’ve embraced that line of thinking. Pulling from the digital and analogue creates, I have put together a series of dynamic pieces that I am anxious to share.

THE French DJs welcome you to the Empire Room from 10pm to 4am to celebrate Electronic music, starring French DJs FunkyT and DJ Mak-Len, and guest DJ Tropic.

In addition to the  “Frenchalicious” Mime who will guide the audience through the night, video screenings of Electro Remixes will take this musical experience to a visual and theatrical level that to fulfill this experimental journey.

The French DJ’s night is the new monthly Electro rendez-vous, every Friday night from 10PM to 4AM, in the most out of the ordinary clubs Gotham has to offer. Our mission is to highlight the talents emerging out of one of Deejaying’s most powerful and productive nation: FRANCE and the French World.

Tickets cost $12 if you pre-register online before 4pm on October 14. Ladies get in for free before 11.30pm. A $20 cover will be charged at the door.

7. Arturo O’Farrill and the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra: a tribute to Andy and Jerry Gonzalez

Andy and Jerry Gonzalez are arguably the most important siblings in Latin jazz. Between the Fort Apache Band and Conjunto Libre, the Gonzalez’s have been at the forefront of music that has shaped the lives of countless musicians and listeners. In this tribute, GRAMMY winners Arturo O’Farrill and the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra, joined by Andy and Jerry on stage, will cast the brothers in a retrospective of their greatest moments. New pieces for Andy and Jerry will be premiered, including Arturo O’Farrill’s Ft. Apache Concerto.

8. Makane Kouyate Denbaya

Featuring Malian singer and percussionist Makane Kouyate, Denbaya (which means family in Bambara) performs captivating, original compositions that defy easy categorizations. Steeped in the West African rhythmic and musical tradition, Denbaya plays tunes with influences that range from jazz and rock to reggae while remaining true to the spirit of Malian music.. The the band iincludes singer, and djimbe player Makane Kouyate, pianist John Austria, saxophonist Marco Chelo, guitarist Keith Gamble, balaphone player and arranger Balla Kouyate, drummer Vince Warren, and percussionist Jose Rosario.

9. ASIKO & FLAMME KAPAYA

Asiko was formed in 2003 by the multi-talented singer, designer and percussionist Foly Kolade. Originally from Ogidi, Nigeria, Foly has trained and performed with Roy Ayers, Mariam Makeba and George Benson in Nigeria and New York. Asiko Afrobeat Ensemble is the musical expression of a diverse group of musicians and influences. Known for its high-voltage blend of Rock, Funk, Jazz and West African rhythms, Asiko’s powerful lyrics speak truth to power in the spirit of the late Fela Kuti.

One of the best guitar soloists of his generation, Flamme Kapaya lives and works between Paris and Kinshasa. Self-taught, he draws his inspiration from various musical genres, including the jazz masters such as George Benson, but also from classical and Latin vibes. Since the late 1990s, he has featured prominently in the Congolese music circuit working with Maison Mere and  accompanying the Congolese singer Werrason before taking the name “Flamme” and starting the group which bears his name.
