In just over two short years, the pioneering Brooklyn dhol and brass party juggernaut RED BARAAT have become known as one of the best live bands playing anywhere. Led by dhol player Sunny Jain, the nine piece (comprised of dhol ((double-sided barrel shaped North Indian drum slung over one shoulder)) drumset, percussion, sousaphone, and 5 horns melds the infectious North Indian rhythm Bhangra with a host of sounds, namely funk, go-go, latin, and jazz.

2. Doctor Nerve

Emerging in the early 80s out of the Creative Music Studio and finding fertile ground in the early ’80s “downtown/punk jazz” scene, NYC’s own Doctor Nerve have been dazzling and amazing audiences for nearly 30 years! Keeping a surprisingly stable personnel throughout the years, the group have always been known for their screamingly high-energy performances that combine elements of metal, artrock, punk jazz and improvisation.

3. Bombino w/ Oran Etkin’s Kelenia

Born in Agadez, a dusty desert outpost on the great Saharan camel caravan, Omara “Bombino” Moctar, a young Tuareg guitarist and songwriter, was raised during an era of armed struggles for independence and violent suppression by government forces. His electrifying jams capture the spirit of resistance and rebellion while echoing with guitar riffs reminiscent of fellow Africans Tinariwen and Ali Farka Touré not to mention rock and blues icons such as Jimi Hendrix, John Lee Hooker and Jimmy Page.
Oran Ektin has been described as a “great clarinet player” and “an excellent improviser” by the New York Times’ jazz critic Ben Ratliff and a “woodwind maestro” by PRI’s internationally syndicated show, Afropop Worldwide. He has performed around the world with musicians ranging from jazz guitarist Mike Stern to rapper Wyclef Jean. His latest album, Kelenia (Motema Music), fuses traditional Malian and Jewish music with modern jazz creating what the Boston Globe dubbed a “hypnotic balance between straight-ahead jazz and world music”. Kelenia won “Best World Beat Album” at the Independent Music Awards.

4. Sefira

Sefira is comprised of vocalists Sofia Rei, Malika Zarra, Sachal Vasandani and percussionists Brahim Frigbane and Mathias Kunzli. It was created by three singers with sympathetic spirits and entirely different backgrounds, and celebrates the human voice at its most naked and potentially influential — improvised, original music surrounded by only voices and percussion. The unique format draws upon the creative, improvisatory force of all participating musicians. Each of the singers represents not simply traditions, be they jazz, North African, or Latin American, but a current flowing to the present, molding their sounds and improvisations to one another, within the context of each piece. The two percussionists provide a foil for the singers’ timbre with rich texture and a strong rhythmic energy

Proceed from the benefit goes to the RED STUDIO for the use of the space. Red Studio in collaboration with Downtown Africa is organizing this benefit to help the Red Studio to improve the space, promote special events for musicians and let musicians meet and play together for free. This event and rehearsal studio is over 1000 square feet and ideal for full band rehearsals and perfect for private parties.

6. Jeff Mills w. Sleepy & Boo

Jeff Mills is considered one of the most brilliant DJ and producers of techno in the World. He is the most recoｇnized representative figure of the Detroit Techno, where he began his career as a DJ on the WDRQ radio in 1984. He has created with “Mad Mike Banks” the collective “Underground Resistance”, which became a reference in the electro sphere. In 1992, Jeff Mills created his own label in Chicago :with “Axis”, he could keep his artistic independence and produce his own timeless electronic music compositions, inspired of science fiction. Jeff Mills’ artistic career goes much further than techno music. For over a decade, he’s been transcending disciplines with a large number of collaborations in contemporary art. Interested in cinema and attracted by images, Jeff Mills started working, in 2000, on the fusion of image and sound. In 2000, he created and presented at the Centre Pompidou a new sound track for the film “Metropolis” by Fritz Lang. A year after, he created “Mono”, an installation inspired by the movie “2001, a Space Odyssey”, by Stanley Kubrick. In 2004, Jeff Mills produced the DVD “Exhibitionist” which presents DJ sets filmed from various angles (from front, top and side). At that same period, he acquired a new tool, the DVJ-X which allowed him to manipulate image and sound together paving the way into the Art World. In 2005, Jeff Mills made, for MK2, a new sound track for the silent movie “Three Ages” by Buster Keaton, and ….
