Composer Adam Rudolph returns with another series of Go: Organic Orchestraat Roulette. In concert he will conduct between 20 – 35 musicians in a spontaneous way, using a newly created score of music/letter grids, language themes, tone rows, traditional and synthetic scales, diadic and intervalic harmonies, The compositions will also utilize Rudolph’s rhythm concept of “Cyclic Verticalism” to generate form and weave what he calls an “audio syncretic music fabric”. The music is “organic” in the sense that the compositions and conducting exist as an inspiration and context for the musicians to express themselves by using their instruments as an amplifier for their inner voice.

Chicha Libre plays a mixture of latin rhythms, surf music and psychedelic pop inspired by 1970’s Peruvian music from the Amazon. The Brooklyn-based band mixes up covers of forgotten Chicha classics with French-tinged originals, re-interpretation of 70’s pop classics as well as cumbia versions of pieces by Satie and Ravel. Zim Ngqawana was born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, and first made his mark at the historic inauguration of President Nelson Mandela in 1994, where he directed the 1OO-member Drums for Peace Orchestra, led an elite group of 12 presidential drummers, and was featured as solo saxophonist. This recognition came after a late start and some tough struggles. Zim was the youngest of five children and started playing flute at the age of 21; although he was forced to drop out of school before completing university entrance requirements, his prowess won him a place at Rhodes University. He later went on to study for a diploma in Jazz Studies at the University of Natal. Working with the University’s ensemble, he attended the International Association of Jazz Educators convention in the U.S. and was offered scholarships to the Max Roach/Wynton Marsalis jazz workshop and subsequently a Max Roach scholarship to the University of Massachusetts, where he studied with jazz legends Archie Shepp and Yusef Lateef. Since his return to South Africa in the ‘9Os, he has worked in the bands of veteran greats Abdullah Ibrahim and Hugh Masekela and has also devoted much time and effort into building up a number of his own small and large groups. Zim is committed to developing and creating an audience for new South African jazz. His music draws on influences ranging from South Africa’s folk and rural traditions to Indian and Western classical music, world music, and the avant-garde. He is open to everything and in search of spirituality. He refuses to limit his music to being specifically South African. He doesn’t play jazz; he plays music. He isn’t African; he’s universal.

Their sound reflects the diverse tastes and backgrounds of its band members, ranging from hip-hop to jazz, Latin bossa nova to punk rock coupled with their socially conscious and politically charged lyrics.

World-renowned pianist and composer Muhal Richard Abrams has been in the forefront of the contemporary music scene for half a century. A co-founder of The Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), Abrams celebrates his 80th birthday this year. This concert will feature Abrams in two ensembles: with the percussion of Adam Rudolph and electronics of Tom Hamilton, and with vocalist Jay Clayton, bass clarinetist Marty Ehrlich, and bassist Brad Jones.

Fula Flute integrates the tambin, traditional Fulani flute of the Fouta Djalon highlands of Guinea. It can be encountered sometimes as one travels through the back country, emanating from the forests, fields and mountains as if the song of a spirit. Andy Laster’s Yiash will perform arrangements of early 20th-Century Egyptian pop by Jewish composers Zaki Murad and Dawud Husni, among others, and Laster’s chamber jazz compositions utilizing the group’s unusual instrumentation and rhizomic approach to improvisation. (Andy Laster – alto and baritone saxophone, clarinet, Curtis Hasselbring – trombone, Erik Friedlander – cello, Kermit Driscoll – bass). In part two of the evening, Laster’s recent compositions for strings will be performed, including the world premiere of a trio written for cellist Erik Friedlander, violist Stephanie Griffin and violinist Jennifer Choi. George Clinton is the single most influential figure in the history of funk, the mastermind behind both Parliament & Funkadelic. He revolutionized R&B during the ’70s, twisting soul music into funk by adding influences from several late-’60s acid heroes: Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, and Sly Stone. The Parliament/Funkadelic machine ruled black music during the ’70s, capturing over 40 R&B hit singles (including three number ones) and recording three platinum albums.
