NYC-based guitarist and composer Ben Tyree presents Sonic Architectures LIVE residency at Art Café in Brooklyn every Tuesday evening in February 2015. The residency will allow Tyree to present new works in solo, duet and larger ensemble configurations collaborating with previous as well as new partnerships.
Stephanie Rooker is a composer, vocalist, cross-cultural music educator, and sound healing facilitator. Since 2007, Rooker has distinguished herself as a force of soul on the NY music scene with her band The Search Engine, duo work with guitarist Ben Tyree, and freelance work with ensembles throughout the city including Riverside Church Inspirational Choir & Alvin Ailey Dance Theater Company’s Revelations chorus. She has released two albums of original music – Tellin You Right Now (2008) and The Only Way Out is In (2010), with a third album currently in the works. In 2013, Rooker Voice Journey Sound Center, which offers a diverse array of vocal training & sound healing workshops, private lessons, community gatherings and sound healing services for the furthering of musical paths and enrichment of the holistic sonic experience.
Formed in 2009, BT3 has been astonishing NYC audiences at The Blue Note, (the now defunct) Black Betty, The Living Room, Rose Live Music, The Shrine, BAM Cafè and on 89.3 FM WKCR’s Live Constructions with their daring and unique style of instrumental, and heavily improvisational jazz/funk fusion. Performing all original material composed by guitarist/band leader Ben Tyree, BT3 also features rotating members Theo Harden (bass), Kevin Farrell (bass), Steve Jenkins (bass), Jeremy “Bean” Clemons (drums), Lawrence Qualls (drums), John Medeski (organ), DJ Logic (turntables), Stacy Dillard (tenor saxophone), and V. Om Shalom Trio is a group of award-winning World Music artists. They draw on rhythmic and melodic aspects from their Far Eastern and Middle Eastern roots to create a fusion of Indian Classical and Jewish Folk.
The two words that join to form the Om Shalom’s name are both synonymous with Peace and the Sacred.
“Om” is the primordial sound of the Divine energy of Universal Creation. The vibrational tone is inaudible to all but only a very few highly enlightened yogis and spiritual gurus. Because of this, it is sometimes called the” unstruck sound.”
The Hebrew word “Shalom” has many definitions, one of which is “peace.” It is also one of the many sacred words used in Judaism to describe the name of the Divine.
The path of music is peace; its purpose, Divine. Enjoy the divine music of Om Shalom, and may peace be with you.
Abhik Mukherjee (sitar): Abhik is a gold–medalist Sitar player from Calcutta, India. His concert tours of Argentina, Suriname, Italy, Germany and Switzerland were widely acclaimed by the press and public. He also shared the stage with legends like Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder in the celebration of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial at Washington DC, in the presence of U.S. President Barack Obama.
A Chicagoland native, cellist Jessie Reagen Mann is based in New York City and involved with a variety of musical projects. Jessie has performed at the White House, the Met Ball, at Radio City, Carnegie Hall and on many TV shows performing with Beyonce, Jay-Z, Billy Joel, Frank Ocean, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Adele, Savion Glover as well as many others. She is often found playing with singer-songwriters in NYC’s clubs and with her cello duo 2VC. Jessie has recorded for many labels and is also a Musician in Residence at Congregation B’nai Jeshuran on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. In May 2010, Jessie received the Outstanding Musical Achievement Award from the Max Reger Foundation of America.
Ranendra Das began learning tabla in his native Bangladesh from his father at the age of 3. Ranendra is a Gold Medal winner from Bangladeshi cultural competitions, and has played in Asia, Canada, and the US. Ranendra performed for President Barack Obama at the Martin Luther King, Jr., Memorial Dedication in Washington, DC in 2010, and has played at many prestigious venues including Madison Square Garden and Symphony Space. Ranendra earned his Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance from the University of Bridgeport in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and a Master of Fine Arts from Goddard College in Plainfield, Vermont.

Terry Dame presents an ongoing monthly music series dedicated to instrument inventors and players of found objects and other musical oddities. Dame is a composer, multi-instrumentalist and instrument builder and leader of the invented instrument ensemble Electric Junkyard Gamelan. Terry Dame’s WeirdWednesdays did start on a Wednesday, but to make it weirder, it will be now happen every last Thursday of the month…because Thursday is the weirdest Wednesday of all.
Special guest will be Miguel Frasconi performing on, well yes, glass. He is a composer and improvisor specializing in the relationship between acoustic objects and musical form. His instrumentarium includes glass objects, electronics, laptop, and constructions of his own design. His unique glass instruments are struck, blown, stroked, smashed and otherwise coaxed into vibration. Miguel’s compositions include chamber music, operas, film music, dance scores, and his array of activities have included collaborations with Balinese composers, with operatic vocalists, with Tibetan songwriters, and with laptop virtuosi.

Multi-instrumentalist Walusimbi Haruna will bring his music for the first time to New York. A master of multiple Ugandan styles, this is a one-time chance to hear him on his first US tour.
Haruna is one of the artistic treasures of Uganda. In addition to leading several groups, he also performed with Bela Fleck in the Grammy-winning “Throw Down Your Heart.” He also acted in the Oscar winning “Last King of Scotland” as the guard.

For those who have seen The Sway Machinery in action, little explanation is needed. The band’s combination of rhythmic power and potent folklore takes no prisoners. On stage the energy of submerged worlds is torn out into the light of day. And indeed, the historical tradition of Cantorial music, which is the focus of the band’s work, is very much a lost world. The music of The Sway Machinery invites the listener to become like children wandering in the forest, discovering something mythic and wonderful.
The band boasts an unusually accomplished line-up of musicians, featuring guitarist Jeremiah Lockwood of Balkan Beat Box, drummer John Bollinger of Barbez, bass saxophonist Colin Stetson of Arcade Fire and Tom Waits’ band, and the trumpet and tenor sax horn section of the band Antibalas, Jordan McLean and Stuart Bogie. The powerful combination of musical personalities yields an unassailable force of excitement.
In September 2007, the band premiered Hidden Melodies Revealed, a secret celebration of Rosh HaShana (the Jewish new year) at Angel Orensanz Foundation. This multi-media concert celebrated the power of the Cantorial music tradition in an event that blurred the line between rock show and ritual. In 2009 the band brought this unique concept to Los Angeles and San Francsico, playing to enthusiastic standing room only crowds.
The band’s debut full-length album, also entitled HIDDEN MELODIES REVEALED, was released on JDub Records in 2007.
In January of 2010, The Sway Machinery traveled to Mali to perform at the legendary Festival of the Desert. While in Africa, the group recorded a new album featuring collaborations with luminaries of Malian music, including Vieux Farka Toure and Khaira Arby. The album that resulted from this remarkable intersection of worlds is called The House of Friendly Ghosts.

Bob Coen’s amazing, short video of the song “Shumba ya Mukwashi (The lion spirit of the hunter)” performed by Chartwell Dutiro and Nora Balaban will be screened. The song is a prayer for guidance from the ancestors during troubled times. The video was filmed overlooking New York City’s downtown financial district, and it juxtaposes the sacred and spiritual mbira music of Zimbabwe and the memory of the tens of thousands of slaves who were brought here from Africa in the early days of the New York colony.
