Famed jazz guitarist Mary Halvorson celebrates the second night of her Roulette residency with a debut performance from the new trio comprised of Ambrose Akinmusire, Craig Taborn, and Halvorson.
Guitarist/composer Mary Halvorson has been called “NYC’s least-predictable improviser” (Howard Mandel, City Arts), “the most forward-thinking guitarist working right now” (Lars Gotrich, NPR.org) and “one of today’s most formidable bandleaders” (Francis Davis, Village Voice). Ms. Halvorson is best known for her longstanding trio, featuring bassist John Hébert and drummer Ches Smith, and more recently for her solo guitar project, Meltframe. She has several other projects as a bandleader including a quintet, septet and octet. Collaborative projects include a chamber-jazz duo with violist Jessica Pavone, the avant-rock band People and the collective ensembles Thumbscrew (with Michael Formanek and Tomas Fujiwara) and Secret Keeper (with Stephan Crump). Ms. Halvorson is also an active member of bands led by Anthony Braxton, Taylor Ho Bynum, Trevor Dunn, Tomas Fujiwara, Ingrid Laubrock, Joe Morris, Tom Rainey, Mike Reed and Marc Ribot, among others.

Over the last 25 years, Ayman Fanous has forged a singular synthesis of classical and flamenco guitar technique with contemporary free improvisation. His music has been described as a “stylistic amalgam of Derek Bailey and Paco de Lucia” (Signal to Noise). Fanous also reaches back into his Egyptian ancestry in improvisations on the bouzouki. Although he has only recently begun to release recordings, his duo partners have included a number of leading improvising musicians including Bern Nix, Tomas Ulrich, Jason Hwang, William Parker, Frances-Marie Uitti, Ned Rothenberg, Mark Feldman, Mat Maneri, Lori Freedman, Kinan Azmeh, and Tatsuya Nakatani. Over two nights at the Firehouse Space, Fanous will bring together some of the most original and acclaimed improvising musicians in New York to debut four different ensembles, including several first meetings.

Iran-born and Southern Californian based Sahba Motallebi is a songwriter, Tar, Setar and Shoorangiz virtuoso and an internationally acclaimed musician. She has studied music and composition at distinguished institutions such as the National Conservatory (Iran), Saint Petersburg Korsakov Conservatory (Russia), RGS University (Turkey), and California Institute of Arts (USA). Sahba has been recognized as the best Tar player at the Iranian Music Festival (FAJR) for four consecutive years. VOYAGERS. An acoustic trio featuring kora maestro Yacouba Sissoko from Mali, Austrian saxophonist Edith Lettner, and American guitarist Banning Eyre. Sissoko has collaborated with artists from classical/jazz violinist Regina Carter to Paul Simon. Lettner is a veteran collaborator with West African musicians, both in Austria and Senegal. And Eyre has a long history of forays into African guitar. Together, they make magic—music deep with tradition and alive with spontaneity.
