Jazz, New Music and Free Improv musicians perform in a special fundraiser to help beloved percussionist, composer, teacher Warren Smith rebuild his priceless percussion collection lost to Hurricane Sandy’s flooding. Those instruments, obtained over decades of touring, include mallet instruments, numerous drums, timpani, a celeste and unique, hand-made percussives from around the world.

Warren Smith is known for masterful percussion work with an endless array of jazz artists, a bevy of pop stars, and in countless studios and Broadway pit bands. In 1961 he co-founded the Composers Workshop Ensemble which is ongoing. Over the decades Warren worked with Miles Davis , Gil Evans, Aretha Franklin, Nina Simone, Lloyd Price, Nat King Cole, Sam Rivers, Muhal Richard Abrams, Janis Joplin (musical director), Tony Williams Lifetime, Andrew White, Julius Hemphill, Nancy Wilson, Quincy Jones, Count Basie, and Carmen McRae, Anthony Braxton, Charles Mingus, Henry Threadgill, Van Morrison, and Joe Zawinul. He was a founding member of Max Roach’s percussion ensemble, M’Boom. In the ‘70s and ‘80s Smith ran Studio Wis which hosted many New York jazz musicians, such as Wadada Leo Smith and Oliver Lake. These days, he continues to perform with many artists and leads his own ensembles. He can also be found in the drum chair of Karl Berger’s Improvisers Orchestra.
