The Roots’ Black Thought Presents: The Last Dragon, a unique, one-night-only screening experience

Black Thought, lead singer and emcee of the iconic hip-hop band The Roots, will host a special film screening of The Last Dragon. The screening is the first in an expected series of events highlighting classic “throwback” movies with memorable soundtracks.Tuesday’s screening will be followed by Black Thought leading a first-time-ever conversation with the film’s star, Taimak and with El DeBarge, singer of the soundtrack’s biggest hit, “Rhythm of the Night.”

The events will also benefit Black Thought’s charity, GrassROOTS Community Foundation, which provides health and wellness programs for impoverished women and girls.

For fans unable to attend, the evening will also be a digital event, with live streaming exclusively on blackthought.com, a new editorial platform for thoughtful and insightful conversation on all things culture — ranging from entertainment to the sociopolitical. The website will officially launch in Summer 2016 featuring original content, new music from Black Thought, and more.

Online viewers will be able to join in by watching the film at home and live tweeting along with the theater audience. All participants will also have a chance to win autographed merchandise from Black Thought, Taimak and El DeBarge.

This unique experience will upgrade the standard “dinner and a movie” night out to include an interactive conversation about film and music led by Black Thought, who is an authority on both.

About Black Thought

Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter is the lead singer/MC for the hip-hop band The Roots, who also serve as the house band for “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” on NBC. Black Thought, who co-founded The Roots with drummer Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, is a four-time Grammy award winner (most recently for executive producing the ‘Hamilton’ cast recording), widely lauded for his complex and politically aware lyrical content, his sharply honed live performances, and his poignant acting roles.

About El DeBarge

R&B’s most distinctive and celebrated voices, El DeBarge continues to make his personal and creative transformation. Currently in the studio working on the follow up to his Grammy nominated, Second Chance album, El DeBarge says “he’s pacing himself for longevity and taking the necessary steps to maintain it.”

About Taimak

Taimak is a versatile actor, director and writer as well as a nationally recognized marital arts expert. At the age of eighteen, he won the New York State Kickboxing Championship and was inducted into the Martial Arts Hall of Fame in 2010. He has worked as choreographer with such notables as Debbie Allen, Jaime King, Madonna on her Drowned World Tour, former rock band Bush as choreographer of their “Chemical Between Us” video and many others. Shortly after winning the New York Sate Kickboxing Championship, Taimak was cast by music mogul and Motown legend Berry Gordy to play Bruce Leroy in the classic cult film “The Last Dragon” (released on Blu-ray August 25th, 2015 by Sony Pictures for the 30th anniversary of the original film).
