1. JC Sanford Orchestra

Trombonist/composer/conductor JC Sanford is a musician of rare breadth, deeply rooted in the traditions of Jazz and Classical music, yet constantly pushing at their boundaries. His collaboration with fellow composer David Schumacher and their jazz orchestra Sound Assembly yielded the CD Edge of the Mind, which received many accolades including CD Baby’s Top 10 Jazz Records of 2009. JC also conducts the twice-Grammy-nominated John Hollenbeck Large Ensemble, the Alan Ferber Nonet with Strings, and the Alice Coltrane Orchestra featuring Ravi Coltrane and Jack DeJohnette. His large ensemble compositions push the limits of what is “expected” in a specific musical setting without totally abandoning the tradition of the genre, sounding adventurouswhile remaining “accessible.” This iteration of his ever-evolving ensemble features his unique blend of modern jazz and chamber music, employing several colors rarely seen in the traditional “big band” instrumentation including orchestral strings, vibraphone, F horn, double-reeds, and accordion.

There are 5 Mondays this October,and every one of them will feature the On Ka’a Davis and his Famous Original Djuke Music Big Band  directed by  On Ka’a Davis. Drawing inspiration from the outer realms and more into the squat politics of the East Village basement jam…polyrhythmic complexity and primal passions…an incessant pulse beat that tears the roof off the cerebral avant garde…another world never imagined possible from the undying, ever growing counter culture crucible of downtown New York.

Keyboardist Nik Bärtsch (at times spelled “Baertsch”) is a player, composer, and improviser very much in the European classical-oriented style of jazz, but has created a language that transcends these basic categories. A native and resident of Zurich, Switzerland born in 1971.  ECM records owner Manfred Eicher recognized not only Bärtsch’s original approach, but its similarity to the music the label has championed since the early ’70s, and signed them, beginning with the revelatory CD Stoa.

5. Brandon Terzic and the Xalam Trio

Brandon Terzic is an up and coming oud virtuoso who has not only gotten a firm hold on the tradition, but has begun to add to the language and contexts of the instrument. He leads an outstanding lineup of musicians and they will be bringing there world/jazz stylings to the Stone. 6. New York Arabic Orchestra NYC Fall Performance

The New York Arabic Orchestra is the home of contemporary and classical Arabic music in America. The orchestra, based in the New York metropolitan area, is an Arabic music institution of performance and education co-founded in 2007 by Bassam Saba, a world renowned multi-instrumentalist virtuoso, conductor and teacher of Arabic music; and April Centrone, the orchestra’s lead percussionist. The orchestra brings together a culturally diverse group of musicians around a common passion: Arabic Music.

The 35-piece New York Arabic Orchestra presents contemporary instrumental compositions by Bassam Saba, along with selections of Arabic vocal and instrumental music of Lebanon, Syria and Egypt. The NYAO is comprised of the oud (Arabic lute), nay (Arabic reed flute), qanun (Arabic zither), Arabic percussion, strings, woodwinds, lead vocalists and chorus. Known throughout the U.S. and abroad as one of Arabic music’s finest conductors, Bassam Saba has led the NYAO to prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center and has developed an authentic sound that is regarded around the world.

The NYC event is part of a double concert series with Ghada and Naji, the next performance on Saturday October 27 at Detroit Symphony Hall, celebrating the Arab American National Museum Gala.

7. PitchBlak Brass Band

PitchBlak Brass Band is a ten-piece New York City-based group of composers, producers, artists, rappers, strivers, hustlers, and superstars who came together in fall 2010 and have been rocking neighborhoods from Park Slope to Harlem ever since.  Drawing upon its members’ diverse musical backgrounds, styles, and visions, PitchBlak mixes hip-hop and brass to create music that pulses with Afro-Caribbean beats, soaring jazz solos, and mind-melting guitar licks. Gilles Peterson, is a Swiss DJ, record collector and record label owner residing in London, UK. Through his labels Acid Jazz, Talkin’ Loud, and latterly Brownswood Recordings, he has been associated …When all is said and done, whichever role Gilles is performing – DJ, broadcaster, producer, compiler, label boss or plain old record collector – the music is always the bottom line. His passion and enthusiasm is unfailing and deeply infectious, and it’s the reason that his BBC iPlayer stats routinely nestle in the Top 5 BBC Radio shows… that luminaries like Radiohead’s Thom Yorke or Erykah Badu drop in to co-present special shows… and that his knowledge, opinion and playlists are universally respected.

Leron Thomas’ musical journey began in his hometown of Houston Texas, always inspired by family rich with respect and understanding of quality music. After graduating from Houston’s distinguished High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, he ventured to New York City to develop as a trumpet player and composer, enrolling in Manhattan’s The New School. Having music in film he also featured in an independent short film 2010 and currently appears on Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Bubblers Eight.

9. Makane Kouyate Denbaya

Featuring Malian singer and percussionist Makane Kouyate Denbaya (which means family in Bambara) performs captivating, original compositions that defy easy categorizations. Steeped in the West African rhythmic and musical tradition, Denbaya plays tunes with influences that range from jazz and rock to reggae while remaining true to the spirit of Malian music.. The band includes singer, and djimbe player Makane Kouyate, pianist John Austria, saxophonist Marco Chelo, guitarist Keith Gamble, balaphone player and arranger Balla Kouyate, drummer Vince Warren, and percussionist Jose Rosario.
