Join us in for a hands-on musical experience led by hand percussionist and musical messenger Adam Maalouf. The workshop will focus on rhythms and techniques for hand drums of the Mediterranean, including Frame Drums, Doumbek (goblet shaped drum), and Riq (Middle Eastern Tambourine). The workshop will also explore ways of approaching and composing on the Hand Pan (commonly known as the Hang Drum). No experience is necessary! Multi-Instrumentalist Adam Maalouf is a performer, composer, educator and musical messenger. As a specialist in world percussion, Adam produces his own music live and in the studio, in which he incorporates instruments such as the Hand Pan, cello, vocals, drum set, world percussion, marimba, and electronics.

NYC-based guitarist and composer Ben Tyree presents Sonic Architectures LIVE residency at Art Café in Brooklyn. Tuesday evening in February 2015. The residency will allow Tyree to present new works in solo, duet and larger ensemble configurations collaborating with previous as well as new partnerships.
Since 2007, Ben Tyree has released recordings of his original work on his own Sonic Architectures label. Sonic Architectures LIVE represents Tyree’s concepts of visual forms in music & vice versa. Creating music in a space where an audience can seethe construction of sonic forms is key in this next step of communicating the overall mission of the label. The residency platform will provide an entryway for collaborations that will result in spontaneous compositions as well as improvisation within a given musical framework. This setting will ideally take collaborators (as well as composer) out of their comfort zone as well as provide a gestation platform for new ideas and projects.
Guitarist Ben Tyree is a performer and composer of virtuosic ability, infectious groove, and eclectic tastes. All of those elements are placed on stunning display on his latest release, Burn It! LIVE, a blistering live set from the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s prestigious BAMcafé Live series. That versatility has led to work with artists as diverse as Vernon Reid, Kyp Malone (TV On The Radio), Valerie June, Elliott Sharp, and Burnt Sugar: The Arkestra Chamber.

A City Winery favorite, Peter Wolf returns for a series of shows this February. When Peter last played the Winery he had a sold out three night run in New York and the Chicago Winery as well.
Peter Wolf has been known for decades as the dynamic lead singer and songwriter of the J.Geils Band, with whom he showcased his talents on such hits as “Centerfold”, “Freeze Frame”, “Love Stinks” and “Musta Got Lost”.
Wolf’s musical roots precede rock ‘n’ roll and are inspired by his friendships and performances with such distinguished artists as Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Aretha Franklin and Van Morrison.

Dedicated to the traditions of Balinese performing arts and committed to exploring new music, NewYork City’s Gamelan Dharma Swara is carving out a compelling niche.
Founded in 2000, Dharma Swara is one of the leading Balinese gamelan and dance groups in the United States and has performed at renowned NYC music venues including (le) Poisson Rouge, Symphony Space, Joe’s Pub, Roulette, and BAM, as well as cultural institutions such as MoMA and Asia Society.The group toured Bali in 2010 with an invitation to perform in the Bali Arts Festival’s popular Battle of the Bands, and most recently, a stunning performance at Basilica Soundscape in Hudson, New York, was described by The New Yorker as feeling “straight-up religious” and provoked “perhaps the weekend’s most rapturous response (including a fair amount of crying.)”
While traditional repertoire is an honored part of Dharma Swara’s vision, they also value the exploration of new music for gamelan. This includes recent compositions, such as Joel Mellin’s Synesthesia, Andrew McGraw’s Sikut Sanga, Nerissa Campbell’s Legian 1983 (Breathe My War), and Putu Saptanyana’s Lingga Tangan. The group has also performed works by leading Balinese composers, including Made Subandi’s Kupu-Kupu Kuning and Dewa Ketut Alit’s Cecanangan and Geregel. Dharma Swara is also currently commissioning new works for gamelan.
