Born in 1954, Scott Henderson grew up in an era where blues-rock was at it’s peak. His formative musical years took place in South Florida where he played the clubs with all kinds of bands playing everything from Led Zepplin to James Brown. As he was learning his instrument, Henderson was influenced by Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix, Ritchie Blackmore, and the great blues guitarists Albert King and Buddy Guy.
Even though Henderson claims to be more of a blues-rock player, it was the influence of jazz that led him to the style of playing and composing that he is now famous for.

3. Vijay Iyer Trio

Over the summer, Vijay Iyer led a rhythm–and–horns sextet in a revelatory concert at Battery Park’s Castle Clinton and mounted a major collaboration with choreographer Karole Armitage at Central Park Summer Stage. The acclaimed pianist and composer will go back to basics the first two nights with music by his longtime trio featuring Stephan Crump (bass) and Marcus Gilmore (drums), but will reconvene the sextet formation with special guests Mark Shim (Elvin Jones, Mose Allison), Steve Lehman (Anthony Braxton, Meshell Ndegeocello) and Graham Haynes (Steve Coleman, Cassandra Wilson). “Among the young lions of jazz piano, Indian–American artist Vijay Iyer is a standout. An evening of immersive creations from two esteemed composers, featuring Morton Subotnick with projected visuals from light artist / painter Tony Martin, and electro-acoustic music from George Lewis with the Wet Ink Ensemble. Martin and Subotnick will present a new project, building on collaborative history that dates back to 1963. Wet Ink performs recent works by innovative composer, theorist, and improviser George Lewis, including “Les Exercices Spirituels” (2010), from Lewis’ new release on Tzadik’s Composer Series.

7. Dikanda

This Sunday, New York City will host the Polish folk band Dikanda as a part of their first tour of the US. Dikanda plays both self-composed, original numbers as well as traditional songs those of Polish heritage might find familiar. When there are no words to express the exact emotion lead singer/accordion player Ania Witczak wants to convey, she simply makes them up. “I get a story in my head, and I want to tell it. But I’m not in the right frame of mind to use language,” Witczak says. “When I start to sing, words just come.” Witczak calls the coming together of the band “miraculous.” Hailing from Szczecin, an industrial port on the Baltic with mixed Slavic and Germanic roots, the group has long stood out in a music scene dominated by standard-issue pop. Since this beginning, they have released five records and toured extensively throughout Europe. While they are indeed well-traveled, this is their first time in the US.
