Oliver Coates makes his NYC debut at Le Poisson Rouge on 9/29/14 with a night of long melodies over cello drones, shimmering textures degrading Chopin samples and a unique collaboration with legends of downtown dance music and minimalism Zummo, Brooks and Ruyle. Coates plays soundtrack music from Under the Skin by Mica Levi, Bach, Xenakis, arrangements of Squarepusher Tommib Help Buss and Messiaen Oraison and drone pieces for polyphonic curved bow and electronics.
He will then perform with composer and trombonist Peter Zummo and his regular collaborators Ernie Brooks and Bill Ruyle. These three have collaborated closely with the late cellist Arthur Russell, and with each other, since the late 1970s, as well as serving time in such legendary outfits as the Lounge Lizards (Zummo), the Modern Lovers (Brooks) and LaMama (Ruyle). The performance serves as a prelude to a UK sextet tour around Zummo’s music with Ralph Cumbers (Bass Clef) and Kevin McIvor (DJ Twitch from Optimo).

The NY Gypsy Festival celebrates its tenth year with another outstanding performance schedule and a total of six shows from October 2 – 17, 2014.
Highlights include the Desert gypsies from India, RAJASTHANI GYPSY CARAVAN, the eclectic Latin ensemble LAS CAFETERAS, the heavy Serbian brass orchestra BOBAN i MARKO MARKOVIC ORCHESTRA and the bluesy gypsy folk sounds of HAZMAT MODINE.
The festival will also feature Russia’s happiest band PAKAVA IT ORCHESTRA, local heroes ZLATNE USTE, RAYA BRASS BAND and FRANK LONDON’S KLEZMER BRASS ALL-STARS, Slovakia’s (via Baltimore) ORCHESTER PRAZEVICA, and Indian brass-bhangra specialists BLACK MASALA.

Mehmet Ali Sanlıkol pairs Turkish instruments such as zurna (double reed wind), ney (end-blown flute), kös (large kettledrums) and nekkare (small kettledrums) with a 6-horn jazz combo to perform his Turkish music-influenced compositions, in which Turkish makam (mode) and usul (rhythmic cycles) are intertwined with modern jazz. To achieve this goal, Sanlıkol innovates in both traditions. His compositions stretch the possibilities with Turkish instruments in unprecedented ways, next to jazz trumpeters using extended tubings and alternate fingerings devised by Sanlıkol. At this concert Mehmet Ali Sanlıkol will present such compositions from his new album, entitled Whatsnext.

The Green Monster Big Band is an 18-piece outfit formed by Fred Ho (The Sweet Science Suite, 2013 Next Wave Festival), the composer—called the “greatest baritone saxophonist of all time” by The New Yorker—who passed away this April. Combining revolutionary politics with African and Asian musical traditions, Ho pioneered a vibrant new form of jazz deployed in service of socialist ideals. Comprising leading jazz luminaries who have performed with the likes of Duke Ellington, Ornette Coleman, and Gil Evans, the Green Monster Big Band pays tribute to Ho’s visionary spirit.

Taikoza will present ancestral Japanese Taiko drumming, bamboo flutes and colorful Japanese dances. The international touring Taiko group – led by director Marco Lienhard – will present new compositions as well as traditional pieces in this unique concert. Special guest from Japan: Ichiro Jishoya.
This will be another memorable event featuring drums of all sizes, with some drums weighing 400 lbs and over 6 feet long, this is a night not to be missed. Marco Lienhard and Ichiro Jishoya are both former members of the legendary group Ondekoza. This concert will celebrate the 150 anniversary of the diplomatic relationship between Switzerland and Japan with Swiss born director Marco Lienhard.
Ichiro Jishoya was recently featured in the documentary Drum Out the Drum of Happiness – Inclusion. This concert will be a unique chance to experience Jishoya’s very energetic and youthful energy on the Taiko.
Experience the thunderous rhyhms of the ancestral Japanese Taiko drums and the magical sounds of the bamboo flutes. Hear the 100 lb. Taiko drum give thunderous voice to traditional and new compositions.
Roughly translated, Taiko means big drums and that’s exactly what Taikoza brings. Big drums, powerful rhythms, and electrifying, room thumping energy. This exciting group draws from Japan’s rich tradition of music and performance to create a highly visual performance. With colorful traditional costumes and dynamic motion, Taikoza’s shows are immensely poppular with audiences of all ages.
Drawing from Japan’s rich tradition of music and perfomance, Taikoza has created a new sound using a variety of traditional instruments. In addition to drums of assorted sizes, Taikoza incorporates the shakuhachi and the fue (both bamboo flutes) and colorful dances.
The group has toured internationially and has appeared on ESPN, NBC, History Channel, etc. Taikoza’s music is featured on Nintendo’s Wii game: Red Steel 1 & 2. The group has performed for the Sumo tournament at Madison Square Garden and tour.
Taikoza presents a very popular program for schools in the New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Philadelphia and Virgian areas for young audiences. Taikoza did a tour of Birmingham, AL area schools funded with a NEA grant that the Birmingham International Festival received.
Taikoza was formed in New York City by members of Ondekoza (the group that started the renaissance of taiko in Japan in the 60s and introduced taiko to the world).
The members of Taikoza have performed in some of the most prestigious halls and locations such as Carnegie Hall, Boston Symphony Hall, Suntory Hall, Moscow’s Tchaikovsky Hall and House of Music, Osaka Festival Hall, Lincoln Center, Mount Fuji, Miyajima Temple in Hiroshima, Peace Memorial Hall in Hiroshima and many others. They have performed in Russia, Italy, Brazil, Argentina, Switzerland, Germany, France, Mexico, Belarus, Republic of Georgia and many more.
