Stooges Brass Band has earned their rank as one of the elite brass bands in New Orleans. The band consistently provides a welcome blast of true New Orleans spirit engaging audiences with their innovative blend of traditional New Orleans brass sounds, contemporary jazz and hip-hop beats.

Celebrating the release of Devils (out 6/23), The ambient grunge-rock band The Black Atlas will be joined by The Little Top Circus & MedicineShow, a 19th-century style medicine show, featuring hellfire sermons and lettered ballyhoo, ill-advised acts of physical improbability, cigar smoke hoochie-cooching, hayseed hokum and gypsy fiddling, all in the service of saving souls and demonstrating the healthful benefits of the Little Top’s own patented snake oil derivative.

5. Brooklyn Raga Massive Presents Akshara Ensemble

Following its highly successful debut in 2014, ART MEETS MUSIC returns to DROM on a thrilling double bill featuring a musical performance by singer Vanessa Falabella and an art exhibition by one of Brazil’s finest painter, Ernani Silva.

A charismatic musician of depth and expression, Vanessa Falabella will present fascinating music from the Northeastern part of Brazil, where African rhythms and European Portuguese melodies mingled to create some of the country’s most exciting music.

8. Sanjoy Banerjee

Raga is a Sanskrit word which means an act of coloring. In musical terms it represents feeling of emotions. One of the unique characteristics of Indian music is the assignment of definite times of the day and night for performing Raga melodies.

Through his soulful presentation and improvisations, combined with mastery over sargams, taans, and renditions of Khayal, Sanjoy Banerjee explores the evening ragas, the melodic beauty and majestic splendor of which evoke deep emotions within his listeners.

Pt. Sanjoy Banerjee is one of the finest vocalists of international repute from India and a distinguished exponent of the Kirana Gharana of North Indian Vocal Classical Music. Sanjoyji was a scholar at ITC Sangeet Research Academy under the able guidance of Late Pt. A.T. Kanan and Sangeet Bidushi Late Malabika Kanan, who considered him as their successor to their musical heritage.

With his sonorous and unwavering voice he has enthralled audiences at home and abroad, performing extensively in the UK, Germany, Bangladesh, Canada, USA and within India including at Sur Singar, Swai Gandharva, Sangeet Piysi, Ustand Faiz Khan Sangeet Sammelan.

11. Ragas Live Festival 2015 – WKCR Radio

The Ragas Live Festival 2015, one of radio’s most ambitious events, expands in it’s fourth year on SATURDAY JUNE 20th. Over 70 world-class musicians will perform Indian Classical Music over a period of 24 hours, all broadcast on WKCR.
This year it will now by now be followed on SUNDAY JUNE 21st by free concerts in Central Park.

1- On SATURDAY JUNE 20th, 2015 (midnight to midnight) WKCR will broadcast 24 hours of live performances throughout New York City at 89.9 FM-NY and internationally at www.wkcr.org. The festival will be recorded and made available on both the WKCR archives online at www.wkcr.org and at www.nycradiolive.org.
2- This will be followed by free concerts, workshops and Mass Appeal of Indian Drums (open to everyone) in Central Park – Dairy Lawn, mid-park on West 65 Street (5/6 Aves) New York, NY from 1:30-8pm on SUNDAY JUNE 21st as part as Make Music NY (MMNY).

12. SERIOUS IMMOBILITIES

ComposersCollaborative, Inc. & The Center at West Park present a free 24-hour marathon performance of SERIOUS IMMOBILITIES, to usher in 2015’s Make Music New York.

SERIOUS IMMOBILITIES in its fully-realized form consists of two “layers” of music performed simultaneously. These are:

1) Serious Immobilities – 840 variations on Erik Satie’s Vexations, for piano solo, by Arthur Jarvinen & 2) Spineless Dog – variations on Satie’s Vexations, for MIDI keyboard controller, MacIntosh computer, and electronics, by Randall Woolf.
The performance begins on Saturday, June 20th at 8:00 AM and concludes on Sunday, June 21st at 8:00 AM, with a rotating group of musicians, featuring many of the new music world’s luminaries. Artists scheduled to perform include:

This event marks the first time in New York that SERIOUS IMMOBILITIES has been performed complete since its 1998 premier at The Kitchen. Several of the CCi/West Park performers took part in the premier, including CCi’s Artistic Director Jed Distler, who has long desired to revive SERIOUS IMMOBILITIES for a new generation of musicians and audience members alike.

13. Falu’s Bollywood Orchestra

Falu’s Bollywood Orchestra combines the timeless elegance of Bollywood’s golden age music with a modern inventive style to create a musically and visually stunning treat.

Singer Falu is highly acclaimed for her formidable Indian classically-shaped vocal talent. Currently her first album “Falu” is featured in Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History’s “Beyond Bollywood” exhibit as representative of the voice of Indian American trendsetting artists, and in early 2015 Falu was named one of the top 20 most influential Global Indian Women in India’s Economic Times.

Falu moved to the States in 2000 and her subsequent career has led to a series of brilliant and high profile collaborations with Yo-Yo Ma, Wyclef Jean, Philip Glass, Ricky Martin, Blues Traveler and A. R. Rahman. She was appointed Carnegie Hall’s ambassador of Indian Music in 2006 and has performed there numerous times as part of the Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute programs.

Falu and her eponymous band have put out two albums of original and traditional music (“Falu” in 2007 and “Foras Road” in 2013).  These songs and live performances have been aired on FOX TV, National Geographic TV and NPR, and have been described by the New York Times as “East and West, ancient and modern”, by Billboard as “Ethereal and Transcendent” and by Vogue as “a rare brand of timeless elegance.”

Known for combining her ancestral Flamenco roots, her deep love and understanding of Brazilian music, with the language of Jazz, Rebeca Vallejo deftly weaves all these elements into a sound that is truly unique. “Azúcar, Canela” reaches beyond what’s purely “entertaining” in order to create a unifying journey where three musical cultures, three countries (Spain, Brazil, US), and three different types of “blues” converge. The fusion of flamenco with the flavors of the old and new continents will not only preserve flamenco, but also help to take it further into the future. 16. Taikoza Free Concert Series In The Parks

In collaboration with NYC Council, East Winds, Inc.and NYC Parks Department we present Summer Taikoza concert series in the Parks.

 

Join NYC Parks and East Winds, Inc. for a special concerts featuring Taikoza. Taikoza has created a new sound using the thunderous rhythms of the ancestral Taiko drums and the magical sounds of the bamboo flutes. Roughly translated, Taiko means big drums-and that’s exactly what Taikoza brings. Big Drums, powerful rhythms, and electrifying, room-thumping energy. This exciting group draws from Japan’s rich tradition of music and performance to create a highly visual performance.

Taikoza was formed in New York City by members of Ondekoza (the group that started the renaissance of taiko in Japan in the 60s and introduced Taiko to the world). The members of Taikoza have performed in some of the most prestigious halls and locations such as Carnegie Hall, Boston Symphony Hall, Suntory Hall, Moscow’s Tchaikovsky Hall and House of Music, Osaka Festival Hall, Lincoln Center, Mount Fuji, Miyajima Temple in Hiroshima, Peace Memorial Hall in Hiroshima and many others. They have performed in Russia, Italy, Brazil, Argentina, Switzerland, Germany, France, Mexico, Belarus, Republic of Georgia, and many more.
