California Composer Terry Riley launched what is now known as the minimalist movement with his revolutionary classic IN C in 1964. This seminal work provided a new concept in musical form based on interlocking repetitive patterns. It’s impact was to change the course of 20th Century music and it’s influence has been heard in the works of prominent composers such as Steve Reich, Philip Glass and John Adams and in the music of rock groups such as The Who, The Soft Machine, Tangerine Dream, Curved Air and many others. Terry’s hypnotic, multi-layered, polymetric, brightly orchestrated eastern flavored improvisations and compositions set the stage for the prevailing interest in a new tonality

75 DOLLAR BILL. Rick Brown and Che Chen play an idiosyncratic take on Mauritanian music using homemade percussion and electric guitar. Their music doesn’t strive to any sort of authenticity, yet conjures up the best of African desert music. It is both beautiful and hypnotic. Dream Seed is a two-hour sound bath hosted by members of Golden Drum and Didge Project. Shamanic chanting, mantras, overtone singing, Native American songs, indigenous music, didgeridoos, crystal singing bowls, bells, gongs, harmoniums, tuning forks and other overtone-emitting instruments are used to create an environment conducive to deep relaxation and inward investigation. Participants are led through guided meditations and sound healing practices designed to harmonize body, mind and spirit.

Roshni Thompson is a NY based tabla player who hails from the West Indies, where she was initiated into the ancient tradition of Indian classical music by her vocalist father. She has continued her tutelage in the Benares style of tabla playing under Shri Tapan Modak and is currently a student of the epic Farukhbad exponent, Pt. Anindo Chatterjee. While her passion is Indian classical tabla, she has played in folk, jazz and multi-genre modalities. Roshni has performed at notable local venues such as Pianos, Knitting Factory, The Bitter End, The Shrine and Tea Lounge.

Bangladeafy (Bangladeafy is a truly unique band in every way possible. The Brooklyn-based two piece is comprised of bassist Jonny Germ, who happens to have sensorineural hearing loss, and drummer Atif Haq, who is a Bangladesh native – hence the name Bangladeafy. Free and noise elements serve taut lyrical images, through-composed forms grow out of improvised structures, old traditions are draped with new shapes, not to throw either into stark relief, but rather because both new and old are always wearing each others’ clothes, asking for entry from the other.
