ABOUT THIS EVENT

Rock Paper Scissors, INC.’s  founder Dmitri Vietze is putting together a two-day world music pre-conference from Thursday, January 10, 2013 at 9am to Friday, January 11 at 3 pm as part of the APAP conference. APAP is a conference where many concert presenters and festivals book much of their upcoming year, and it has a strong world music component, including the piggyback showcase festival globalFEST  and 200 other world music showcases! DooBeeDoo strongly encourages anyone serious about booking world music tours in North America to attend APAP, the organization has generously agreed to let professionals in world music attend the pre-conference without registering and at no charge.

Here is the schedule (subject to change):

State of the Recording Industry:

What’s working and what’s not? Though APAP is a gathering for those on the live side of eclectic music (and other performing arts), it is also a rare chance for professionals in the field of world music to meet, share ideas, and catch up. The recording industry continues to be in major flux with constant shifts in technology, fan-building, deal-making, and marketing. This panel is a rare chance for key remaining global music labels to compare notes about experiments, what’s working, and what’s next. By having it during APAP, it is a rare bridge between the recording industry and the performing arts field.

Panelists:
Jacob Edgar (Cumbancha), Jon Kertzer (Next Ambiance/Sub Pop), Paul Dryden (ATO), Rich Bengloff (A2IM)

Technology Tools for Artists, Labels, and Concert Presenters

Every five minutes there is a new technology platform for the music field. Some have stuck around and proven their value. For the first time ever, several come together to explain how they work for an audience of world music artists, labels, and concert presenters. Bring your notepad and learn what each of them does. Hear about their success stories (including those in the world music field) and new offerings. Find out which ones work for artists and which ones work for venues, presenters, and festivals.

Panelists:
Liv Buli (Next Big Sound), Kendel Ratley (Kickstarter), Jaclyn Ranere (The Orchard), Tony van Veen (CD Baby), John Hammond (Missing Piece Group)

World Music Infiltration and Cutting Edge Curation

Whether you are a presenter, an agent, a record label, an artist, manager, or a marketer of another sort, at some point you have thought about how to get more people—fresh ears—to check out a performer or recording artist. What is the best way to bring more listeners and fans into the fold of global sounds? Do you change your selections to reach a younger or more mainstream audience? Or do you build a niche that is even nichier? How do you partner with other events or efforts to widen the audience? What can make global music hip and hip music global? How can you use non-genre themes to draw people in? How do you create an experience rather than produce or show? This eclectic mix of people in a range of roles will kick off a conversation that will reverberate in your personal curatorial efforts for the next year.

Panelists:
Shanta Thake (Joe’s Pub & globalFEST), Mat Hall (Luaka Bop/Maine Road Management), Tom Chauncey (Partisan Arts), Kerry Clarke (Calgary Folk Festival), Cathy Edwards (International Festival of Arts & Ideas), Guillaume Decouflet (Valeo Productions, manager of A Tribe Called Red)

Performing Arts, Community Engagement, and International Diplomacy

Regardless of your role in the music field, you can’t help but notice the role the arts play in cross-cultural engagement and international diplomacy. How can community engagement benefit world music presenters? What kind of partnerships can you create in your community for audience development and cross-cultural exchange? How are presenters using international work to bring diverse audiences to their venues? How can artists tap into community development and diplomacy? How can US artists connect with networks worldwide to expand their career overseas? Panelists will answer these and many other related questions.

Panelists:
Pennie Ojeda (National Endowment for the Arts; moderator), David Fraher (Midwest Arts/Caravanserai), Stacy White (Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, U.S. Department of State), Deirdre Valiente (Center Stage/Lisa Booth Management), Elena Moon Park (OneBeat, Found Sound Nation)

Open Forum: Routing 2.0 and Market Development

How can an artist develop a local following in your market, when there are financial pressures in world music to always present something new and different? How can we as a community facilitate the development of more secondary markets to make tours across this vast continent more feasible? How do presenters in the same city or region work together to grow an audience for world music or for a specific artist? How can you tap into emerging developments in Canada to further touring efforts? What are other groups of presenters doing to further develop the world music touring scene these days? This open forum provides an opportunity for presenters, agents, managers and others involved with touring to discuss these and related questions.

Open forum facilitated by Dmitri Vietze (rock papers scissors)

Panelists: you, the participants
