In addition to the National Guard and FEMA, one of the more active relief efforts in New York City has been a volunteer effort organized by alumnae of Occupy Wall Street called Occupy Sandy Relief. Along with groups like 350.org and Recovers.org, Occupy activists quickly mobilized hundreds, and then thousands, of people to help affected areas of New York City. Democracy Now! senior producer Mike Burke speaks with Occupy organizer Catherine Yeager in the Rockaways about Occupy Wall Street’s transformation into Occupy Sandy Relief. Continue reading

DooBeeDoo recommends: Democracy Now!’s live special coverage of the 2012 election.

Yesterday I went to see Democracy Now! host Amy Goodman as she spoke at the Tribeca Barnes & Noble. In a talk entitled “The Elections, Superstorm Sandy, Climate Change, and the Movements That Make History,” Goodman linked Sandy and other extreme weather events to climate change, and discussed the corporate media’s failure to make the connection. She also talked about tomorrow’s elections, the movements that make history, and shared tales of her 100-city tour launched, which was supported by DooBeeDooBeeDoo, with the release of her latest book, The Silenced Majority: Stories of Uprisings, Occupations, Resistance, and Hope.

After her talk I had a chance to chat with her and gave her my CD SoSaLa “Nu World Trash”. I also offered her SoSaLa to be her house band, and she liked this idea. She also got my card, let’s see whether she’ get back to me. Enshallah!
My impression of Amy was that she looked far better in life than on TV. She looked relaxed and was very emotional and enthusiastic. She talked very well and controlled.

Democracy Now! Election 2012 Silenced Majority Tour

Text by Democracy Now!

Democracy Now! is on the road for a 100-city Election 2012 Silenced Majority Tour. Between now and Election Day, Democracy Now! will broadcast live across the United States, traveling through many of the electoral swing states, going beyond the mainstream media’s obsessive focus on the latest poll numbers and candidate gaffes, to examine how people are organizing; the impacts of restrictive voter ID laws that are making it harder to vote; and how the massive influx of campaign cash following the Citizens United decision is changing how our democracy works.

Amy Goodman‘s latest book, The Silenced Majority: Stories of Uprisings, Occupations, Resistance, and Hope, written with Denis Moynihan, provides a vivid record of the events, conflicts, and social movements shaping our society today. The Silenced Majority pulls back the veil of corporate media reporting to dig deep into the politics of “climate apartheid,” the implications of the Fukushima nuclear disaster, the movement to halt the execution of Troy Anthony Davis, and the globalization of dissent from Tahrir Square to Liberty Plaza. Throughout, Goodman and Moynihan show the work of ordinary people to change their media—and change the world.

Join us for a public event near you—to help raise critical funds for the public community television and radio stations across the country. Continue reading

Watch Live: Democracy Now! Expands the Presidential Debate with Responses From Third Party Candidates in Real Time!

While President Barack Obama and Republican nominee Mitt Romney face-off in a much anticipated foreign policy debate at Lynn University in Boca Raton, FL, Democracy Now! breaks the sound barrier by hosting an expanded live debate between two additional presidential candidates: Jill Stein of the Green Party and Rocky Anderson of the Justice Party. Stein and Anderson will get a chance to answer the same the questions put to Obama and Romney in real time.

The special show will begin at 8:30 p.m. EDT with a 30-minute pre-debate discussion. At 9 p.m., we’ll broadcast the Obama/Romney debate live, that is, until we “pause” it after the first question to get answers from Stein and Anderson. Our broadcast will continue until midnight EDT they have had a chance to answer all of the same questions. (An invitation was extended to Gary Johnson of the Libertarian Party, but his campaign declined.)
