David Simons is a composer and performer specializing in percussion, Theremin, electronics, homemade instruments, and World Music. Tonight, Simons presents a select retrospective featuring Gamelan Son of Lion performing his controversial Gong (Hump)ing Ceremony; a chamber group including Lisa Karrer and Denman Maroney playing songs based on the surrealist literature of Raymond Roussel, Alfred Jarry, and Mark Leyner; and Simons’ groundbreaking trio with Stephanie Griffin and Lisa Karrer in which each trigger percussion from their instruments.

SHOWPAPER presents a series of events at Roulette celebrating the newspaper’s guest curators and participating artists’ work, in newsprint as well as their explorations in the mediums of sound and video. Curated in collaboration with Chris Johanson, this month’s event features the Showpaper Documentary as well as a screening of a 1990 public access television series from Williamsburg shot by SHOWPAPER cover artist, JED BRAIN ARCHIVES WEST, contrasting the decade-divided nostalgia of North Brooklyn in both the mid-2000s and the mid-90s. Accompanying JED BRAIN PICTURES will be a performance of 8bit and synth perversions by Narwhalz of Sound. A video by recent SHOWPAPER cover artist, Dana Dart-Mclean, will also be included in the program, and all 3 covers from Chris Johanson’s curatorial series will be on view and available.

Comprised of 8 members, hailing mostly from Colombia, M.A.K.U. SoundSystem makes big music that begins in traditional Afro- Colombian rhythms and ends somewhere in the punk-jazz stratosphere. Clarinet, trombone, sax, guitarra, and Latin percussion supplement a rambunctious, driving rock core, creating a sound familiar enough to be danceable but always surprising.

The New York Times calls him the “ambassador for a silenced music.” Honored as a peacemaker and virtuoso, Amir Alan Vahab is one of New York’s most celebrated and distinguished composer / vocalists of sufi and folk music; his work transcends political boundaries while maintaining traditional sensibilities in a way few artists can manage.
Amir Vahab’s music is rooted in tradition, but has been influenced by contemporary sounds. Like Amir himself, his music symbolizes diversity-in-unity. Amir Vahab is currently Teaching and lecturing private and group classes in universities, libraries, museums and cultural centers on the one hand, and organizes music therapy and sound healing workshops on the other.

Shoko Nagai (piano, processing) and Satoshi Takeishi (percussion, electronics) are VORTEX.
Fusing accoustic instruments, such as the piano, the accordion, the organ and percussion instruments with electronics in their music their music consists of composition and improvisation. Their mission is to integrate all possible musical elements and use them in their own way.
The Restrictor started circa 2004 by sound and visual artist Damien Olsen ( keys, guitars, various electronics ) and Kevin Rozza (bass, bass guitar). Today, years away from its beginnings the band has finally established its sound at the end of the line of its most pushing influences: post jazz ECM style, and avant garde 19th and 20th Century orchestral music (Stravinsky, Debussy, Satie, Rimsky Korsakov, Mussorsky), the psychedelic Canterbury scene of late 60s and early 70s and European progressive- free rock jazz.
