The experience was life changing for all involved, and has inspired Dzieci to refine this sacred liturgy to its essence, in order to create a ritual not bound by any one religion.

A Passion According to St. Matthew

Theatre Group Dzieci (djyeh-chee), founded in 1997 by Matt Mitler, uses techniques garnered from Jerzy Grotowski and the Polish Theatre Laboratory, Peter Brook, humanistic psychology, and ritual forms derived from Native American and Eastern spiritual disciplines in a search for the “sacred” through the medium of theatre.

Dzieci balances work on performance with work of service, and is committed to Art as a path for transformation. The company has been presented in schools, hospitals, and houses of worship, including The Cathedral Saint John the Divine, where their signature piece, Fools Mass, has been an annual event for the past twelve seasons.

8. Iva Bittova

Date: Sunday, March 24, 2013

Venue: Le Poisson Rouge (158 Bleecker Street, New York, NY 10012, Phone: 212- 505-3474)
Ticket: $20
Genre: ‘folk’ music, contemporary music, improv

Czech singer/player/composer Iva Bittová has said. “The violin is a mirror reflecting my dreams and imagination. I believe there are fundamentals to my performance, such as the music’s vibration and resonance between violin and my voice.” That relationship is beautifully explored on this album – recorded at Auditorio Radiotelevisione svizzera, Lugano, and produced by Manfred Eicher – which expresses the essence of Bittova’s unique and extraordinary solo work. These modestly-titled ‘Fragments’ resist definition. An idiosyncratic ‘folk’ music, contemporary composition, improvisation, any and all of these may apply from moment to moment. Bittová’s music is a living, changing thing: “Deciding on a name for my style of music is far from over yet”. Iva Bittová was previously showcased in 2007 on the widely-acclaimed ECM album Mater by composer Vladimír Godár; this marks her solo debut for the label.

Drumming is undeniably one of the oldest forms of music — so old in fact that we can trace it as far back as there were things to bang on (read: forever). Consequently, drumming — and in turn rhythm — has become the backbone of everything that has evolved from the first humans to the latest Ableton session. With so much history and influence it’s about time we gave the drummers some!
With all due reverence, respect, and experimentation we will be presenting Generations of the BEAT,  a two-day Drummer’s Festival complete with an all-star lineup and accompanied by an online guide to everything you ever wanted to know about the legendary, innovative, and current realm of drums.
Join us in celebrating the work of Elvin Jones, sideman to Miles Davis (Blue Moods, Sketches of Spain), John Coltrane (A Love Supreme, Africa/Brass) and Wayne Shorter (Speak No Evil) among countless others as well as a bandleader in his own right. The equally influential Billy Hart will be paying tribute with a group led by Michael Feinberg.
Furthermore, we are incredibly excited to announce that Jimmy Cobb will be performing with us for what is sure to be an unforgettable performance. If you’ve ever heard Kind of BlueIntroducing Wayne Shorter, Cannonball Takes Charge, or Giant Steps you probably already know what we’re talking about. Jimmy has been touring with Joey Defrancesco and Larry Coryell as well as some former Miles Davis bandmates for the past year and is sure to bring both experience and that special touch of innovation to his performance.

The full depth of the festival lies in the complete lineup including the likes of Mark Whitfield Jr., Joe Dyson, E.J. Strickland, Kimberley Thompson, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Lenny White, Andrew Cyrille with Oliver Lake, and more. There aren’t too many chances to see this much history in one room, so be sure to come celebrate it with us!
