1. Spectrum Event—James Nares’s “Street,” Featuring Thurston Moore

Join Spectrum as Thurston Moore, co-founder of Sonic Youth, performs live in front of a projection of “Street,” a video by British-born artist James Nares that features Moore’s original music.

Over the course of a week in September 2011, Nares—a New Yorker since 1974—recorded sixteen hours of footage of people on the streets of Manhattan from a moving car. He then greatly slowed his source material, editing down the results to one hour of steady, continuous motion and scoring it with music for a twelve-string guitar composed and performed by Moore. Nares’s video forms the centerpiece of the exhibition “Street,” on view at the Museum through May 27, 2013.

A reception in the Great Hall with complimentary refreshments precedes this one-time-only musical and visual experience.

3. Tyshawn Sorey plays Greenwich House Music School

The Sound It Out series presents drummer-composer Tyshawn Sorey leading an extraordinary band featuring pianist Masabumi Kikuchi, acoustic/electric guitarist Todd Neufeld and double-bassist Thomas Morgan. Sorey and company will be previewing new material from Wu-Wei, Sorey’s forthcoming album on Pi Recordings.

4. SONGS TO THE SEA: THE MUSIC OF SICILY SEMPRI AMMARI IN JAMAICA

The rich musical tradition of Sicily includes many songs that speak of the sea, sing its praises or are sung by those whose work connects them to the water. Musicians Michela Musolino and Vincenzo Castellana join together to pay tribute to Sicily’s sea. Musolino, a vocalist known for her performances of Sicilian Roots Music, and Castellana, a noted percussionist of the Sicilian drumming tradition, have created a work of song, percussion and recitations which illustrates the intimate connection of Sicily, her history and her culture to the sea which surrounds it.

The concept at the core of SEA/CILY is to provide an experience of Sicily and it’s rich culture which spans centuries and creates a dialogue between a multitude of ethnicities. Through our performances, we can encourage and foster this type of connection among our audiences.

SEA/CILY is a multi-sensory experience of the sea: a concert of traditional and contemporary Sicilian folk and roots music which also incorporates traditional dance and Sicilian Literature into the performance. An unique musical voyage through the epochs of time via the rich and distinct musical tradition of Sicily; the music has been carefully researched and selected to celebrate the soul in its various states of being. During the performance a beautiful image of the undulating sea is projected on the audience as the music immerses them in Sicily’s culture of the sea and its influence on daily life. It’s through this display of humanity’s connectedness to the sea which creates an awareness of the importance of preserving the health and the vibrancy of the sea.

5. Kong Nay with Special Guest Ben Allison

Cambodia’s master of the chapei dong vong (long neck guitar), Kong Nay‘s music caught the ear of Peter Gabriel, who presented him at Womad. Kong Nay’s CD release Mekong Delta Bluescaptures the spirit of his soulful ballads. With sharp wit and a flawless sense of rhythm and rhyme, he improvises satire in his gravelly voice, part of a thousand-year-old tradition that gives poetic license to chapei players. This program will feature Kong Nay solo for the first half of the concert, and then he will be joined New York-based jazz composer/musician Ben Allison, guitarist Marc Ribot and drummer Rudy Royston.
