Multi-Organic Trio is: Nora McCarthy – voice, Aruan Ortiz – piano and Ratzo Harris – bass

Three dynamic innovators, each richly expressive, sensitively powerful and eloquently versed in the vernacular of creative music. They will  perform original  music, music of Jazz composers, and free improvisation tapping into the roots of the universal language = love.

NORA McCARTHY – Voice, Composer, Poet: “A trailblazer: fearless and uncompromisingly original!” … “McCarthy is a remarkably talented musician with a background in traditional and avant-garde jazz, and for her these two worlds are not separate; she uses both structured sounds and joyful noises, and seamlessly harmonizes composition and improvisation.”

ARUAN ORTIZ – Piano, Composer:  “The latest Cuban wunderkind to arrive in the United States.”  He portrays his music as architectural structure of sounds, incorporating contemporary classical music, Afro-Cuban rhythms, and improvisation as primary material for his compositions.

RATZO HARRIS – Contrabassist, Bass Guitar:  “His playing is muscular, a rebar of sonic foundation, yet sinuous and subtle. From the heartbeat of free jazz, to aural filigrees on jazz standards, he’s at the top of his game. Ratzo Harris plays bass that’s living root and steel girder.” Lisa Alvarado

Renegade Sufi plays a singular blend of sitar-based electronic jazz. Led by multi-instrumentalist and composer Dawoud—who has performed and recorded with such artists as Lauryn Hill, James Blood Ulmer, and Nona Hendryx—the group expands upon classical raga with otherworldly electronics, hypnotic drum loops, and free-jazz-style improvisation to produce deep, trancelike grooves.

Pooquette grew up in a small German town near the french border and learned how to play Gypsy Jazz from renowned jazz violinist Zipflo Reinhard.

After moving to New York City in 2006, she met guitar master Stephane Wrembel, with whom she performed for several years, and who introduced her to the New York Gypsy Jazz scene. Since then she has shared the stage with Titi Bamberger, the Avalon Jazz Band, Talking Strings, Mary Alouette, Alex Simon and the Joel Beaver trio, and has performed at the Dances of Vice, Joe’s Pub, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Jalopy theatre, Shapeshifter Lab and numerous french bistros and bars in New York City.

Jonathan currently plays with artists including Todd Sickafoose, Josh Roseman, Jim Black, Briggan Krauss and has just released the CD Surface to Air a collective with Rohin Kemani and Jonti Siman.

Manu has been all over the globe touring with artists such as Angelique Kidjo, New York Gipsy All Stars, and his own group Filtron M. He lends his groovy talent to countless Brazilian, African, and Jazz groups.

Derek is one of the grooviest bassist i know and has played/written/recorded with artists like Coldplay, Diana Krall, Herbie Hancock, Cassandra Wilson, Diane Reeves, Fred Wesley, Keb’ Mo, Clark Terry, Terrence Blanchard, and Sharon Jones and the Dapkings.

The Sound It Out series presents the return of Paradoxical Frog – the ever-experimental trio of saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock, pianist Kris Davis & drummer Tyshawn Sorey. These are three of the most impressive composer-improvisers on the New York creative music scene, each leading multiple bands and constantly in demand as collaborators. Both National Public Radio and The New York Times picked the group’s debut as one of 2010’s best albums, while JazzTimes said: “This empathic trio presents a colorful and convincing example of post-free jazz, mixing intricate rhythmic notions, introspective musings and moments of cathartic release.” The band’s 2012 follow-up, “Union,” met more enthusiasm, and All About Jazz reviewed a Paradoxical Frog live show this way: “It’s as if they’d agreed to avoid the easy way to make a fire and instead rubbed sticks telekinetically.”

Paradoxical Frog will perform a mix of new music and key pieces from their first two albums at Greenwich House. Ingrid Laubrock says: “The three of us have a shared sense of adventure and spontaneity – we take the music off the page very quickly. Although the three of us compose music very differently, we’re all in touch with a certain lyricism and intuition. We take our time so there’s a sense of space as well as tension, in that we’re always ready to jump here or jump there. There’s trust within the trio and a real chemistry, so we’re free to allow each other to really ‘play,’ in both senses of the word. We may not be the most entertaining-y band, but the audience is always important, especially in an intimate place like the Greenwich House. You feel an audience subconsciously, and when you’re connecting with the listener, it can make a performance very special.”
