5. The Eco-Music Big Band
Date: Thursday, August 27, 2015
Time: 7pm
Venue: Joe’s Pub (425 Lafayette Street, New York, NY 10003, 212-967-7555)
Tickets: $16
Genre: big band jazz/modern music with with hip hop, heavy metal, Latin rhythms, and blues forms
The Eco-Music Big Band is proud to debut COLORS OF RESISTANCE at Joe’s Pub! Fusing the classic works of virtuosic free jazz with the freshest voices in big band composition, COLORS OF RESISTANCE is a program that includes the iconic and unreleased works by the late composer and baritone saxophone virtuoso Fred Ho, new works by up-and-coming New York jazz composers Livio Almeida, Marie Incontrera, Albert Marquès, and Zack O’Farrill, and works by overlooked composer/activist Cal Massey, who was a life-long friend of and influence to John Coltrane. Featuring the legendary bass trombonist David Taylor and tenor trombonist David Whitwell in dynamic and specially composed solo concerti, and special guest bass trombonist Felix Del Tredici, this program celebrates these three radical brass improvisers whose groundbreaking work forges a new avant-garde tradition for their instrument.
COLORS OF RESISTANCE tells a joyful story of music that comes from the tradition of resistance to oppression: fusing virtuosic radical jazz with hip hop, heavy metal, Latin rhythms, and blues forms, the Eco-Music Big Band promises a one-of-a-kind experience that intends to propel the jazz idiom into the 21st century. The title of this program was conceived during bandleader Marie Incontrera’s final conversation with the band’s founder (and her long-time mentor) Fred Ho before his death in April 2014, in which Mr. Ho said “all the colors of resistance… all the colors of life… hold them…”. This program is both a tribute to Mr. Ho and his legacy, and a transcendence of his vision with daring and exciting new works by young composers.
The Eco-Music Big Band is a 16-piece, multigenerational and unique big band that includes some of the nation’s most acclaimed jazz musicians (such as saxophonist Jay Rodriguez, bass trombonist David Taylor, drummer Zack O’Farrill, and trumpeter Adam O’Farrill). Hailed as “…music and activism at its finest” (DooBeeDooBeeDoo NY), the Eco-Music Big Band regularly commissions works by younger and emerging composers, and performs music with a vision for a better world. The band also performs the exclusive repertoire of the music of its late founder, Fred Ho, and the 1970s jazz composer and bandleader Cal Massey. The Eco-Music Big Band has performed on respected stages throughout the New York area such as the Blue Note Jazz Club, Red Rooster’s Ginny’s Supper Club, Joe’s Pub at the Public Theater, Zinc Jazz Club, BAMcafe, and Roulette; and on the national scale throughout Vermont and Philadelphia.

the response carries over. the cry from the incision, the desire for intoxication. depression. adrenaline. hypnophobia. in the blank stare of incomprehension, immediacy is perfectly dangerous. the beginning is lost. the solution eradicates.
yet : it is possible to live beyond oneself. it is possible to exist outside of time.
in such a way, we endlessly listen.

Time: 9pm
Venue: Gin Fizz (308 Lenox Avenue (125th Street), New York, NY 10027)
Ticket: $t.b.a.
Genre: jazz/r&b/soul
Marc Cary’s “Harlem Sessions,” which takes place every Thursday night at the New York City speakeasy Gin Fizz, continues to gain ground in the community that the keyboardist-composer-bandleader calls home, and where he’s emerging as a leader committed to the values of the Harlem Renaissance pioneers such as Langston Hughes and Duke Ellington, in the spirit of providing fresh lifeblood to Harlem’s unique and vibrant cultural scene.
Cary began hosting the late night jam session in May, opening it to musicians, poets, rappers, dancers and comedians, and announcing the song menu in advance via social media, to develop an organic and crucial cutting ground for artists. It’s a celebration of local artists, groups and composers who truly brought a melting pot of influences together; take a song like “Harlem River Drive” (by pianist Eddie Palmieri‘s super group), cultivate it, and that typifies what this session is about and how deeply its local roots grow.
Cary’s longtime rhythm section features Rashaan Carter on bass and Sameer Gupta on drums/tabla. Guest artists have been as wide-ranging as poet/performance artist (and five-time winner of “It’s Showtime at the Apollo”) Jessica Care Moore, along with new MC phenom Amani Fela; UK saxophonist Denys Baptiste (Mercury and Mobo prize winner);tap percussionist extraordinaire Omar Edwards, Malian vocalist Awa Sangho; Cuban percussion whiz Joaquin Pozo, the grandson of Dizzy Gillespie associate Chano Pozo, one of the founders of Latin jazz; 1st Annual Duke Ellington Vocal Competition winner Charles Turner, and Mike Casey (both alumni of Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead); Lauryn Hill’s current horn section (Igmar Thomas, Sharif Clayton, James Casey); and Harlem’s own self-described ‘Black Americana’ singer Queen Esther.

11. Brooklyn Raga Massive All-Stars Perform Terry Riley’s “In C”
Date: Friday, August 28, 2015
Time: 7pm
Venue: Rubin Museum (150 W. 17 St., NY, NY 10011, 212-620-5000)

Genre: minimal music played with Indian instruments
Often credited as the piece that created minimalism, Terry Riley’s composition, In C is an ethereal experience. Terry Riley, who studied Indian Raga deeply, believes that to his knowledge the Brooklyn Raga Massive All-Stars are the first group of mainly Indian instruments to perform this piece. The composer himself responded positively to their first performance and encouraged BRM to “use the basic IN C form but open it up to solos by individual members based on some of the patterns.”
The concert will be followed by a free jam session with Brooklyn Raga Massive All-Stars in the lobby from 8:30 – 9:30 PM.
Presented with Harrice Miller Entertainment and community partner Sunny Thakkar.

10:00pm – Makandal’s repertoire derives from the sacred music and dance of Vodou, widely misunderstood in the United States as “voodoo” and includes, as well, the music and dance of springtime festivals, work, and play. The Troupe’s workshops, classes, and performances challenge ingrained stereotypes, keeping the magic of Haiti alive while educating, entertaining, and healing racial and cultural divisions. Makandal focuses especially on the art of drumming, carrying on the spirit and practice of its late Artistic Director, the award-winning drummer, Frisner Augustin. Many of the styles he passed on are rarely heard, so we are very lucky to have this group to preserve the music and keep it vital. http://www.makandal.org/
