His credentials as a recording engineer and producer
As the person responsible for recording a dizzying number of groundbreaking albums by the likes of Sonic Youth, Bill Laswell, John Zorn, Herbie Hancock, Brian Eno, the Swans, Foetus, Cop Shoot Cop,The Boredoms, Unsane and The Dresden Dolls—to name just a few.
His impact on the music scene
Martin Bisi has literally had his finger on the pulse of some of the most vital underground movements to take place in music over the last 30 years. And each group claims him as it’s own: Indie rock fans pigeonhole Bisi because of his early work with Sonic Youth and with No Wavers Lydia Lunch and Foetus, but avant-gardes do the same because of Material and John Zorn, as do hip-hop heads for his part in Herbie Hancock’s “Rockit”.
The musician
Born in New York of Argentinian parents, Bisi has been at this musical crossroads since 1981, when he opened his Brooklyn studio with the financial assistance of Brian Eno. However, in the past year, he has scaled back his efforts as a producer to concentrate on his own material, touring across the US and Europe for the first time, and releasing an LP – Sirens of the Apocalypse – and an EP – Son Of A Gun.
A personal statement
I never mind being pigeonholed like that. I don’t care if one group is oblivious to my involvement in a different genre. I’m glad I’ve been able to create a common thread.
