The DUMBO Arts Festival is thrilled to present The Ship of Tolerance by legendary Russian artist Ilya and Emilia Kabakov. In a joint collaboration with Studio in a School and the Brooklyn Bridge Park the ship will arrive in DUMBO on Friday, September 27 and remain on view until October 8th.

The DUMBO Arts Festival 2013 is a free public event. Each year it seeks to highlight Brooklyn’s commitment to and presence in the arts community by presenting the best in local, national, and international art amid the breathtaking backdrop of the Brooklyn Bridge and the Manhattan skyline.

The DUMBO Arts Festival 2013 attracts 200,000 visitors over 3 days with the participation of over 400 artists from a variety of disciplines, 100 studios, 50 galleries and stages and 100 programming partners. This year, the Festival will take place on Friday, September 27th, Saturday, September 28th and Sunday, September 29th. The official Festival hours are Friday 6pm to 9pm, Saturday noon to 9pm, Sunday noon to 6pm.Outdoor projections on view through midnight all three nights.

OneBeat: a mobile cross-cultural exploration in “sonic diplomacy” bringing 25 musicians from around the world to the US!

OneBeat_LOGO_hannah1OneBeat – a partnership between the US State Dept. and Found Sound Nation – in its second year, has brought 25 young musicians from around the world to the US to form new ensembles, write new material, record new tracks, and colloborate with American musicians in DC, NYC, and other stops along the east coast (tour linked below).  They’ve been in residency for about week in Florida, and their tour kicks off later this week.  This video explains the program and illustrates how this type of tour/collaboration translates into real, person-to-person diplomacy.

Some thoughts about last weekend’s MDMA-related deaths at Electric Zoo: EDM + MDMA

Drugs are a touchy subject.  But last weekend’s MDMA-related deaths at Electric Zoo, and the festival’s subsequent cancellation, have forced the issue back into the national conversation.  And thank God for that:  the fact that practical discussions focusing on harm reduction never make it into the public dialogue is part of the reason why uninformed kids who get their hands on unregulated substances keep dying.

DooBeeDoo Endorses: THE DISSIDENT ARTS FESTIVAL 2013

The annual Dissident Arts Festival, a celebration of revolutionary free jazz, modern music, poetry and film, returns to Greenwich Village’s Brecht Forum for the fourth consecutive year. This year’s will be dedicated to Trayvon Martin and other victims of racist assault.

The Dissident Arts Festival serves as a conduit for progressive artists and other activists to gather and engage in an all-day concert commemorating the rich heritage of movement culture. The 2013 edition encompasses a tapestry of liberation jazz and new sounds including Festival headliner Roy Campbell, poet Steve  Dalachinsky, political satirist and current NYC mayoral candidate Randy Credico, veritable super-band of New Jazz UNCONSPICUOUS MEETING (with Daniel Carter, Ras Moshe , Jeff  Platz, Federico  Ughi and leader Nicolas Letman-Burtinovic), reeds player Blaise Siwula’s ‘TESLA COILS (with Harvey Valdes and Gian Luigi Diana), revolutionary ensemble THE RED MICROPHONE (with John Pietaro, Ras Moshe, Rocco John Iacovone, Nicolas Letman-Burtinivic), “nu world trash” band SoSaLa (led by the multi-national Sohrab Saadat Ladjevardi), African percussionist OBI KAYE, poet Sana Shabazz and Festival house band, THE DISSIDENT ARTS ORCHESTRA, performing an improvised score to the Sergei Eisenstein silent classic film, BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN; the Orchestra will include cellist Gil Sellinger, bassist Laurie Towers, guitarist James Keepnews and others. There will also be a special reading of Langston HughesKids Who Die by a guest speaker, accompanied by Ras Moshe (flute) and John Pietaro (vibraphone)

The word culture comes from the verb to cultivate by  cultivating the garden of our inner self we can harvest its fruit of beauty and joy. Thus art becomes a vehicle, a means, of expressing the innate qualities of the spirit.
