Recommended event: FIGMENT NYC on Governor’s Island featuring Jason Candler’s installation

Text by Jason Candler

in so many words is an 18 ½ hour time capsule of news radio, composed entirely of unedited sound bites, devoid of any newscasters, commentators, editorials or analysts (and is commercial free!).  it sequentially covers the time period of the last Presidential Election, and the first hundred days of the Obama Presidency (May 12, 2008 to May 12, 2009).  The edited result unfolds a mind-opening non sequitur narrative that informs you about the city, country, and world we live in, the scope of news reporting, the connections seemingly different stories have with each other, and how you relate to this reality.  The longer you listen, the more the puzzle pieces fall into place.

to commemorate the 4 year anniversary of when i started the project, i have posted here the first month of the story, which covers May 12 – June 12, 2008. (listen to soundfile here)

Recommended NY Music Festival: VISION FESTIVAL 17

Text by Sohrab Saadat Ladjevardi

The Vision Festivalwhich was initiated by dancer and choreographer Patricia Nicholson Parker in 1996has established itself as one of the world’s top festival of experimental music, free jazz/avant-garde jazz, art, film and dance. It is run under the tutelage of Arts For Art, Inc. (AFA).

Inspired by the 1984 and ’88 Sound Unity Festivals, it was a direct out growth of the  Improvisers Collective 1994 and ’95. Every year this festival is held  in New York City  in June. Members of the board of directors include following people.

Every year the festival takes place in numerous New York venues. It usually consists of between thirty and sixty performances, spread out over a number of days. But this year the main venue is the Roulette in Brooklyn. During all the years the festival has encountered difficulty booking performance spaces, largely because of the Vision Festival’s rejection of commercial sponsors. Booking difficulties are often fixed by arts-foundation grants, however.
