Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest is a documentary film directed by Michael Rapaport about one of the most influential and groundbreaking musical groups in hip-hop history. The band’s sudden break-up in 1998 shocked the industry and saddened scores of fans, whose loyalty has never diminished. Hard-core fan, Rappaport sets out on tour with A Tribe Called Quest in 2008, when they reunited performing SOULd-out concerts across the country, almost ten years after the release of their last album, The Love Movement.

About the Director

Michael Rapaport is an American actor, director, and comedian. He hails from Manhattan, N.Y.C. After being expelled from high school, he moved to L.A. to pursue stand-up comedy. His film debut in 1993′s Zebrahead, a film in which he plays a Jewish boy living in a predominantly African-American Detroit neighborhood and becomes involved with a black girl, earned him a nomination for an Independent Feature Project Spirit Award. Since then he has appeared in numerous films and tv shows, some of which include Bamboozled, Hitch, and Boston Public. He has also made cameo appearances in various hip-hop music videos such as Talib Kweli’s Waiting for the DJ, Ludacris’s Runaway Love, and Jay-Z’s The City is Mine.

Regarding Beats, Rhymes & Life, Rapaport has said, “For me A Tribe Called Quest meant the same thing as the Beatles, Led Zeppelin or the Rolling Stones, so my goal was to treat them the same way those groups have been documented over the years…I wanted to achieve the same raw and rare truth ATCQ captured in their music” [Beats, Rhymes & Life Official Site].
