Hong Kong has long been a backwater for live music. Only a few years back we’d still have to wait months for the latest nostalgia artist to roll into town. In January we’d get Rod the Mod, June The Police and then Coldplay at the end of the year.
But 2013 seems to be the year when it’s all changing and very quickly too.
Thanks to Hidden Agenda (sadly no booze license yet) over in Kowloon we’ve already had Thee Oh Sees , Fucked Up and Gallows play.
Indie night Songs for Children have brought us Yuck and are bringing us a dj set from Fuck Buttons as well Texas rockers Ringo Death Star and then a little bit down the line the Libertines and all before June !
In the world of mega gigs we’ve got Live Nation presenting Kraftwerk in May out at the airport and then 48 hours later Blur turn up. It’s worth noting that Blur sit highly in bands most worshipped by Chinese indie kids.
Here’s Metal Postcard’s completely unscientific top 5 most worshipped bands by China indie types
1)Radiohead
2)My Bloody Valentine
3)Sonic Youth
4)Blur
5)Black Flag
But we digress …. The big rumour in town this week is that Live Nation, the company that has conquered the US live music market, has decided to move to Asia and open an office in Hong Kong later in the year.
Let’s hope we’ve got enough venues to cover the acts they want to roll into town and we presume onto the mainland
While we’re on the subject. Metal Postcard Records trading under its promotions name of Sometimes A Great Notion is teaming up with local independent cafe group Saffron to create a new live music gastro-pub venue on the Peak that will take its cues equally from Portland (OR), Bristol and Shoreditch.
The venue will feature live music from local bands, international touring acts, electronic artists, dj’s ,comedians, writers and so on and so forth. This licensed venue with amazing rooftop and views of Hong Kong island will have a capacity of 250 and will provide a range of imported craft beers, along with a full bar and hot food.
