Catching up with David Fiuczynski after his recent performance at BAM Cafe was really a treat, since I remember catching his shows at the Knitting Factory and Tonic years ago (before they shut down). I was even more excited to hear that his signature exploration of sound through effects and the jazz-funk idiom was still intact after all these years.

Whether you know him as a guitar innovator and virtuoso from the Screaming Headless Torsos (with jungle beat maestro Jojo Mayer), or from his work at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Dave Fiuczynski, with his band Kif, can still keep a hardcore crowd of Brooklyn music connoisseurs engaged and enlightened over the course of a tight yet exploratory set. Busy on double neck 6 and 12 string guitar, Fiuczynski hinted at all the flashy guitar and funk-soul nods from the past and played more composed pieces throughout based on micro-tonal structures, (ie: Eastern-influenced tones). On all songs, the band was swinging, the groove tight , and the outer spaceways of jazz and funk deftly played with.
