THE SATURATORS came together in March of 2015 to spark up what can only be described as Wet Music. Anchored by drummer Josue “Sway” Guillien’s cutting blend of Hip-Hop and Latin drums, Will Sack’s soulful and throaty bass timbre and Misha “Silky” Savage’s eclectic scratching and bombastic stage persona, the group draws on a myriad of influences to create, full-bodied party music. With the addition of powerhouse Brooklyn MC Reddaz, and sit-in percussionists Theo Moore & Frantz Celestin, the group summons up a sound bathed in the likes of P-Funk, J Dilla, Fela Kuti, Erykah Badu, and Lee Scratch Perry.
Funkaholics Anonymous is a Monthly Jam Session and Cypher hosted by Afro-Funk/Hip Hop group The Saturators. Each month the group features a different MC/set of MCs and converts their message and music into live instrumentation. Following this, the group and the afformentioned MCs play host to a myriad of rappers and instrumentalists for an open and improvised jam lasting until Midnight.

On August 19, 2015, Doudou N’Diaye Rose passed away in Dakar. We are deeply saddened by his loss, and in this program, which was intended to feature N’Diaye as a special guest artist, we will instead pay homage to Doudou’s incredible musical legacy , and will present performances by several of his sons–master drummers in their own right–direct from Senegal, Moustapha (“Tapha”) N’Diaye and Birame N’Diaye. They will be joined onstage by Senegalese drummers Mar Gueye and his son, Mor Coumba Gueye, legendary percussionist Neil Clarke, and New School Jazz Artist-in-Residence, pianist and composer Randy Weston.
Doudou N’Diaye Rose was a true legend, and one of the most renowned African musicians of the 20th century. Born Mamadou Ndiaye in Dakar in 1930, Rose is a Senegalese drummer, composer and band leader, and is the recognized modern master of Senegal’s traditional drum, the sabar. He is the father of a musical dynasty which includes some of the most successful traditional musicians of contemporary West Africa.
Ndiaye Rose is purported to have developed 500 new rhythms, and, indeed, his music is quite complex, featuring ever-changing rhythmic structures which he conducts with his trademark vigorous style. He has also invented new types of drum.
This program is part of the Randy Weston Artist-In-Residency series at The New School for Jazz.

Japanese Kotoist Yumi Kurosawa and tabla master Deep Singh join for an innovative musical performance emphasizing both tradition and modernity. Kurosawa, labeled a “mesmerizing… inventive, cosmopolitan composer,” by The New York Times, will showcase her unique approach to the Koto by venturing beyond the limits of traditional acoustics, exploring classical techniques with contemporary, electronically-infused flair. Kurosawa’s solo virtuosity, featured for the first half of the concert, will then be accented with the echoing, sharp tones of Singh’s Indian tabla.
