The Ganawa in Morocco, like African-Americans in the United States, were taken as slaves from sub-Saharan Africa and developed a unique and very spiritual music and culture. On October 13, Abdellah El Gourd will talk about and demonstrate aspects of traditional Ganawan music, and New School Jazz Artist-In-Residence Randy Weston will consider how this traditional music influences his own music. They will also perform together, along with Dar Gnawa of Tanger, a group of traditional Moroccan musicians led by El Gourd.
Ganawa music is one of the major musical currents in Morocco. Moroccans overwhelmingly love Gnawa music and Gnawas ‘Maalems’ are highly respected, and enjoy an aura of musical stardom.
The music is characterized by instrumentation. The large heavy iron castanets known as qraqab (or krakebs, large iron castanets; Ar. قراقب) and a three-string lute known commonly as a gimbri are central to Gnawa music. The rhythms of the Ganawa, like their instrumentations, are distinctive.

Multi-reedist Ras Moshe Burnett’s production organization Music Now! presents an evening of multi-disciplinary radical arts. The event honors the rich heritage of Free Jazz as well as the 98th anniversary of the October Revolution. The concert will comprise five sets of politically powerful statements, commencing with a poets’ open mic. A variety of downtown improvisers will perform works comprising a tapestry of new composition, free improvisation and spoken word; set number four also includes a film screening. The evening will close with an experimental large ensemble performing a piece conducted concurrently by several participants. It will showcase the spoken word performance of women poets.

Marc Cary’s “Harlem Sessions,” which takes place every Thursday night at the New York City speakeasy Gin Fizz, continues to gain ground in the community that the keyboardist-composer-bandleader calls home, and where he’s emerging as a leader committed to the values of the Harlem Renaissance pioneers such as Langston Hughes and Duke Ellington, in the spirit of providing fresh lifeblood to Harlem’s unique and vibrant cultural scene.
Cary began hosting the late night jam session in May, opening it to musicians, poets, rappers, dancers and comedians, and announcing the song menu in advance via social media, to develop an organic and crucial cutting ground for artists. It’s a celebration of local artists, groups and composers who truly brought a melting pot of influences together; take a song like “Harlem River Drive” (by pianist Eddie Palmieri‘s super group), cultivate it, and that typifies what this session is about and how deeply its local roots grow.
Cary’s longtime rhythm section features Rashaan Carter on bass and Sameer Gupta on drums/tabla.
I welcome all my musician, poet, artist, philosopher, and dancer friends to our late night Harlem Hang.
This is not your ordinary jam session. Each week, we aim to build and explore a new common repertoire with original arrangements in the live arena through ensemble work.
We will cover a wide span of music, from the performers and composers who developed this music, to our modern day peers. This will be a celebration of some of the greatest Black and American composers of our time and of our heritage.
In the spirit of all the creativity that came before us here in Harlem, we want to create new standards as community.

Kamasi Washington is an American jazz musician based in Los Angeles, CA. Born into a musical family, Kamasi began playing saxophone at the age of 13, later attending the prestigious Hamilton High School of Music followed by UCLA. He has toured and recorded with the likes of Snoop Dogg, Rapahel Saadiq, Kendrick Lamar, Gerald Wilson, Lauryn Hill, Mos Def, Harvey Mason and Chaka Khan, to name a few. Along with his own 10-piece band, “The Next Step,” Kamasi released his groundbreaking solo album, “The Epic,” on May 5th, 2015. The 172-minute, triple disc masterpiece, which includes a full string orchestra and full choir, debuted at #1 on several iTunes Jazz charts, including the US, Canada, Australia, Russia and UK. In addition to composing his own music, Kamasi is part of a west coast musical collective called the “West Coast Get Down.”
