We’ll attempt to witness song writing and sung performance from as many different angles as possible: from inception to decay, from influx to arborescence, from the entertaining to the funereal. We will dance between the lines of song and narrative, explosively. DAY FIVE :

7. Marc Cary’s Weekly “Harlem Sessions” w. Jessica Care Moore

Time: 10:30pm
Venue: Gin Fizz (308 Lenox Avenue (125th Street), New York, NY 10027)
Ticket: $t.b.a.
Genre: jazz/r&b/soul

Marc Cary’s “Harlem Sessions,” which takes place every Thursday night at the New York City speakeasy Gin Fizz, continues to gain ground in the community that the keyboardist-composer-bandleader calls home, and where he’s emerging as a leader committed to the values of the Harlem Renaissance pioneers such as Langston Hughes and Duke Ellington, in the spirit of providing fresh lifeblood to Harlem’s unique and vibrant cultural scene.

Cary began hosting the late night jam session in May, opening it to musicians, poets, rappers, dancers and comedians, and announcing the song menu in advance via social media, to develop an organic and crucial cutting ground for artists. It’s a celebration of local artists, groups and composers who truly brought a melting pot of influences together; take a song like “Harlem River Drive” (by pianist Eddie Palmieri‘s super group), cultivate it, and that typifies what this session is about and how deeply its local roots grow.

Cary’s longtime rhythm section features Rashaan Carter on bass and Sameer Gupta on drums/tabla.

I welcome all my musician, poet, artist, philosopher, and dancer friends to our late night Harlem Hang.

This is not your ordinary jam session. Each week, we aim to build and explore a new common repertoire with original arrangements in the live arena through ensemble work.

We will cover a wide span of music, from the performers and composers who developed this music, to our modern day peers. This will be a celebration of some of the greatest Black and American composers of our time and of our heritage.

In the spirit of all the creativity that came before us here in Harlem, we want to create new standards as community.

PEACE PEACE – MARC CARY

Hailed as “…music and activism at its finest” (DooBeeDooBeeDoo), the Eco-Music Big Band regularly commissions works by younger and emerging composers, and performs music with a vision for a better world. The band also performs the exclusive repertoire of the music of its late founder, Fred Ho, and the 1970s jazz composer and bandleader Cal Massey. The Eco-Music Big Band has performed on respected stages throughout the New York area such as the Blue Note Jazz Club, Joe’s Pub at the Public Theater, BAMcafe, and on the national scale throughout Vermont and Philadelphia.

Fusing the classic works of virtuosic jazz with the freshest voices in big band composition, COLORS OF RESISTANCE is a program that includes new works by up-and-coming New York jazz composers Marie Incontrera, Albert Marques, Zack O’Farrill, Livio Almeida and Stefan Zeniuk; celebrates the five-decade career of bass trombonist and composer David Taylor; and celebrates the iconic works by the late composers Fred Ho and Cal Massey.

COLORS OF RESISTANCE tells a joyful story of music that comes from the tradition of resistance: fusing virtuosic radical jazz with hip hop, heavy metal, Latin rhythms, and blues forms, the Eco-Music Big Band promises a one-of-a-kind experience that intends to propel the jazz idiom into the 21st century. The title of this program was conceived during bandleader Marie Incontrera’s final conversation with the band’s founder (and her long-time mentor) Fred Ho before his death in April 2014, in which Mr. Ho said “all the colors of resistance… all the colors of life… hold them…”.
