Hailed by Downbeat as Best Graduate Jazz Vocalist (2012) and winner of an ASCAP Young Jazz Composers Award (2013), Kavita Shah makes her debut with “Visions.” Co produced by renowned Benin-born guitarist Lionel Loueke (Herbie Hancock, Terence Blanchard), “Visions” features the traditional sounds of the Indian tablas and West African kora interlaced with those of a jazz quintet. In the musical conversation that ensues, a surprisingly fresh, genre-bending sound is born: one anthematic of Ms. Shah’s multiculural, global generation.

Ehren Hanson began learning tabla when he was 15 years old under Misha Masud of New York City. In 2000, he was accepted as a disciple by the great Pandit Anindo Chatterjee and has developed into an exciting performer and a dynamic teacher.

Junip is a Swedish folk rock, psychedelic rock band. The band is made up of the duo of José González (vocals, guitars) and Tobias Winterkorn (organ, Moog synthesizer).
The band released their first full-length album, Fields, in 2010. On its subsequent tour, the band’s live lineup was expanded to include bass and percussion. Three years later, Junip released their self-titled second album. After the recording of the album and before going on its supporting tour, Araya left the band,[2] being replaced on live performances by other drummers.
On September 22, 2013, the song “Line of Fire” was featured as the background music for the trailer of the series finale of Breaking Bad following the series’ penultimate episode entitled “Granite State.”
Dawn of Midi. The Brooklyn-based trio members’ diverse origins of Pakistan (drummer Qasim Naqvi), India (bassist Aakaash Israni), and Morocco (pianist Amino Belyamani) give clues into its polyrhythmic ideas. While there are hints of each member’s respective homeland, this experimental music transcends geography as the trio has captivated audiences with its unique live performances.

Parallax Conversation Series (Parallax: noun- The effect whereby the position or direction of an object appears to differ when viewed from different positions.)
In this installation of the Parallax Conversation Series we are excited to have two world music masters that have brought an unusual instrument to the forefront of their respective genres as well as jazz. Not only are Snehasish Mozumder and Sylvain Leroux virtuosos on the mandolin and tambin flute, respectively, but they have invented unique variations of the instruments.
Snehasish Mozumder is among those few established musicians in India who have mastered the art of playing mandolin, and have blended it perfectly into the style of Hindustani Indian Classical Music. Coming from a musically oriented family, he started his initial training at the age of four with table and then mandolin. Mozumder’s SOM (Sound of Mandolin) project combines his passion for his native classical music with swinging sax lines forming a blend of North Indian classical music and jazz. In SOM Mozumder uses a double-necked mandolin, his own creation, to play ragas that fit beautifully with surging jazz rhythms. Mozumder sites playing with Ravi Shankar as a career highlight and has since played at Lincoln Center Out of Doors and the Blue Note.
Sylvain Leroux, a Montreal native, plays the tambin, a West African reed flute particular to the Fulani people of Guinea. He is on of the few foreigners to truly master the instrument and has taken it further by creating his own version of it. In addition to the tambin, Leroux plays the dozon ngoni, a lute from the same region of Guinea, and has formed bands that break new ground in combining traditional and modern African music. Leroux currently leads the Fula Flute Ensemble, the African jazz group, SOURCE, and has recently released Quatuor Créole, an album that combines Guinean and French influences with jazz.

Yeni Turku is one of the best selling and best-known bands in Turkey. The group has held concerts in more than twenty countries and has recorded many albums since forming in 1978. Their musical style is characterized by a combination of traditional Turkish and modern musical instruments, including the oud, baglama, kemence, qanun and guitar. Many of their lyrics are based on poems of critically acclaimed contemporary Turkish poets. This diverse combination produces a broad range of Turkish and Mediterranean melodies, incorporating themes of Anatolian and Byzantine cultures. Their music reflects influences of music from around the world. Yeni Türkü’s blend of traditional and ethnic songs appeals to all generations and cross-cultural audiences. All group members have changed several times throughout the years, with the exception of the lead singer Derya Köroğlu.
BARAKKA, a band founded by Baris Kaya in 2003, is a Turkish & Middle Eastern folk rock band that blends traditional instruments such as Oud, Dumbek, Djembe, Baglama with the Western rock sounds of bands such as Boston, Savatage, Megadeth and Pink Floyd.

What could an 18-piece big band learn from the guy who knocked out George Foreman in the eighth round? To wield incredible power yet remain light on its feet? To embrace all cultures with compassion? To take enormous risks—and persevere?
In this deeply personal evening of music and dance, composer Fred Ho’s Green Monster Big Band channels the spirit of Muhammad Ali and other fighter figures who knew how to take punches while standing their ground. Performing choreography by Emmanuel Brown (a lead in Broadway’s Spiderman), dancers Marquez Vargas, Daniel Napolitano, Mathieu Williams, and Brown himself invoke everything from lightning-quick martial arts to the bounce and sting of Ali’s dazzling footwork. Marie Incontrera conducts Ho’s exuberant jazz score as it delivers a swaggering, brassy testament to the champion’s strut, color-blind vision, and humanity.
