A sixty-minute audio-visual performance, Home Within is the latest project of Syrian composer and clarinetist, Kinan Azmeh, and Syrian-Armenian visual artist, Kevork Mourad. In this work, art and music develop in counterpoint to each other, creating an impressionistic reflection on the Syrian revolution and its aftermath.
Home Within has been touring North America and Europe to raise awareness and funds for Syrian refugees.

Ingrid Laubrock is one of the rising stars in the world of creative music having appeared regularly with luminaries such as Anthony Braxton, Luc Ex, Kris Davis, Tim Berne, Ab Baars and many others. She is rapidly buidling one of the most formidable bodies of work to be found and has just released her newest album Ubatuba on Firehouse 12 Records. She’ll be joined by the extraordinary drummer Tom Rainey who has played with some of the most unique and beautiful musicians of the past 40 years including Tim Berne, Fred Hersch and Mark Feldman

Sarah Manning is one of the most distinctive saxophonists and composers in New York City. She has spent equal amounts of time in the North East and Bay Area having worked with major artists on both sides of the continent such as Yusef Lateef, John Zorn and Eyvind Kang. For this set she’ll be joined by Briggan Krauss (of Sex Mob) on guitar, Rob Jost on electric bass and Jeff Davis on drums.

Based in Washington D.C., Brian Settles has quickly become an in-demand saxophonist due to both his virtuosity and unique voice on such a demanding instrument. He’s appeared on all three of Tomas Fujiwara’s Hook-Up Records and has recently toured and recorded with Michael Formanek, worked with Jason Moran and led his own formidable trio. He’ll be joined by his friend, drummer and singer/song-writer Jeremy Carlstedt on drums and electronics for this special evening of unique, spontaneous constructions.

BRM’s popular Africa/India series continues with their most ambitious event yet: an incredible blending of Trance music from Morocco with the Indian and African influences of the BRM-All Stars.
Gnawa music is a rich repertoire of spiritual healing songs and rhythms. Its well preserved heritage combines ritual poetry with traditional music and dancing. Gnawa music is performed in a “Lila,” an entire night of celebration, dedicated to healing and trance guided by the Maalem and his group. Maalem Hassan Ben Jaafer, who is a one of a kind master, inherited Gnawa Music from his father Sidi Abdullah Ben Jaafer Sultan Gnawa, and will be playing alongside the young generation master Samir LanGus who learned Gnawa music in the streets of Agadir, Morocco.

El Tryptophan who is celebrating the release of his debut album Guilt Vacation, on November18 at Trans Pecos in Brooklyn.
“[“Guilt Vacation” is an] experimental ether of mellow distortion adaptations and arrangement edges.” (Impose Magazine) Gryphon Rue, the innovative voice behind El Tryptophan, comes from a legacy of visual artists and political activists. At age 18, Rue toured with Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul & Mary in Vietnam to raise money for victims of Agent Orange. Peter Yarrow proclaims Rue’s music to be “as interesting as it is original. He’s going to make a big, wonderful splash.” Rue is a great-grandson of the artist Alexander Calder, who’s experiments with noise and percussion in mobiles helped shape 20th century avant-garde music. Having studied electronic music at Bard College with avant-garde composers Marina Rosenfeld, Richard Teitelbaum, and Zeena Parkins, Rue’s eclectic sound draws from his visual arts background, which includes jobs curating exhibitions and restoring sculptures. Rue has attracted the likes Grammy award-nominated songwriter Peter Himmelman, who declares: “El Tryptophan has in his blood what so many others want; a truly fearless creative spirit.”
“‘Syntax Static’ is a song about the relation between lust and communication based on an unusual two quarter drum pattern, that’s regularly interrupted by choruses in four quarters that are – alternatively – sonically exploding and imploding. Like a more extreme Beck, Rue incorporates, constantly recycles and disposes of various sounds, genres and ideas, without ever venuring into pop territory, though.” (The Deli Magazine)

Millennials in the world of Indian classical music gather for an evening of discussion and performance featuring the IndianRaga Fellows Ensemble and RAJAS. Highlighting the music in both a traditional and contemporary context, these two groups illuminate the vitality of this art form among young artists in America. The two performances will be followed by a panel discussion on the creative process and personal significance of playing Indian classical music as a young person in the U.S., how we can re-imagine the conversation of cultural appropriation and genuine collaboration, and the spaces and programs that are fueling the music’s preservation and growth.

Marc Cary’s “Harlem Sessions,” which takes place every Thursday night at the New York City speakeasy Gin Fizz, continues to gain ground in the community that the keyboardist-composer-bandleader calls home, and where he’s emerging as a leader committed to the values of the Harlem Renaissance pioneers such as Langston Hughes and Duke Ellington, in the spirit of providing fresh lifeblood to Harlem’s unique and vibrant cultural scene.
Cary began hosting the late night jam session in May, opening it to musicians, poets, rappers, dancers and comedians, and announcing the song menu in advance via social media, to develop an organic and crucial cutting ground for artists. It’s a celebration of local artists, groups and composers who truly brought a melting pot of influences together; take a song like “Harlem River Drive” (by pianist Eddie Palmieri‘s super group), cultivate it, and that typifies what this session is about and how deeply its local roots grow.
Cary’s longtime rhythm section features Rashaan Carter on bass and Sameer Gupta on drums/tabla.

I welcome all my musician, poet, artist, philosopher, and dancer friends to our late night Harlem Hang.
This is not your ordinary jam session. Each week, we aim to build and explore a new common repertoire with original arrangements in the live arena through ensemble work.
We will cover a wide span of music, from the performers and composers who developed this music, to our modern day peers. This will be a celebration of some of the greatest Black and American composers of our time and of our heritage.
In the spirit of all the creativity that came before us here in Harlem, we want to create new standards as community.

After spending time in Africa on a Fulbright Scholarship for ethnomusicology, Brian Shimkovitz brought back huge collections of tapes. After sitting in his Brooklyn apartment trying to figure out what to do with them, he thought that he should share them by creating the Awesome Tapes From Africa blog, which has become a phenomena unto itself. The blog sheds light on obscure and wonderful sounds from across the continent, attracting tens of thousands of visitors a month. As a DJ, Shimkovitz brings the blog to life with 2-3 hour sets blending folkloric pop, left-field dancefloor gems, and hip-hop bangers he’s collected on African marketplace finds.

Sami is an Arabic violinist, vocalist, and rababa player, co-founder and musical director of Zikrayat (www.zikrayatmusic.com), and a teacher and scholar of maqam and Arabic music. His field of expertise is in the Egyptian and Syrian music traditions, and Zikrayat highlights gems from the “Golden Age” of Egyptian Cinema, the 1930’s-60’s, presenting exciting dance numbers alongside classical Tarab repertory.
With Zikrayat, founded in 2006, he has performed at Lincoln Center, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Joe’s Pub, GlobalFEST, the American Folk Festival, the Lowell Folk Festival, the Global Film and Music Festival at William & Mary, Galapagos Art Space, Alwan for the Arts, and numerous other venues. THE SATURATORS came together in March of 2015 to spark up what can only be described as Wet Music. Anchored by drummer Josue “Sway” Guillien’s cutting blend of Hip-Hop and Latin drums, Will Sack’s soulful and throaty bass timbre and Misha “Silky” Savage’s eclectic scratching and bombastic stage persona, the group draws on a myriad of influences to create, full-bodied party music. With the addition of powerhouse Brooklyn MC Reddaz, and sit-in percussionists Theo Moore & Frantz Celestin, the group summons up a sound bathed in the likes of P-Funk, J Dilla, Fela Kuti, Erykah Badu, and Lee Scratch Perry.

Psycho-Mambo from NYC! Like the bombastic fusion of a Latin mambo ballroom and a 21st century rock show, Gato Loco sweeps audiences off their feet. Their live show transforms any space into an instant party, filled with celebration and joy. The group takes its cues from scratchy pre-war Cuban records and vintage betty boop cartoons, while freely incorporating an unbridled modern mentality. Finding the surprising connection between early mambo and salsa of the 50s & 60s, early punk of the 70s, and post-modern avant-garde jazz of the 80s, Gato Loco embraces an all-encompassing sound of irreverence, rebellion, and abandon that defies place or time.
