For this, the debut of Go: Organic Guitar Orchestra, Adam Rudolph called upon 11 of New York City’s finest and most adventurous guitarists. These extraordinary musicians are each composers and bandleaders in their own right; their collective experience reads like a who’s who of contemporary music – from Wilco to Cassandra Wilson to Ornette Coleman.
This is the 10th release of Adam Rudolph’s Go: Organic Orchestra since he began developing the concept in 2001. With “Turning Towards the Light” Rudolph has envisioned and realized a new kind of orchestral sound. He says: “I try to do something new with each performance and recording I do. This time I wanted to experiment with a new kind of orchestration. I felt that the range of sound and rhythm these 11 electric guitars could generate a sonic palate that had never been heard before. I was looking for a new kind of “future orchestra” and I think we found it.”
Rudolph grew up and began playing music on the South Side of Chicago performing with artists like Fred Anderson and by 1978 he was touring Europe with Don Cherry. His longest and most significant collaboration was with the great Yusef Lateef. From 1988 until Yusef’s passing in 2013 they performed as a duet and collaborated as composers on many large ensemble projects.

James Keepnews is a musician, writer, multimedia developer and performance artist. As a musician and composer, he has performed and/or recorded with such artists as George Lewis, Joe McPhee, William Parker, Karl Berger, Daniel Carter, Charles Gayle, Kidd Jordan, Roy Campbell, Tony Malaby, Hamid Drake, Jason Kao Hwang’s Spontaneous River, Ras Moshe, Matt Lavelle, Holland Hopson, He has developed and performed with improvised computer-interactive video systems at The Kitchen, Bard College and other venues.
Dave Berger began his music journey at the age of 13. Violinist Arun Ramamurthy performs a traditional Carnatic concert with mridangist Bala Skandan. Trained by the celebrated violinist brothers Dr. Mysore Manjunath & Sri Mysore Nagaraj, Arun has developed a soulful, expressive sound bringing together his traditonal and contemporary influences. He has carved a niche for himself as a multi-dimensional artist in Indian Classical and World music.

As a songwriter and performer, she merges the charango (a South American string instrument) and bass with many languages, creating a sticky queer sound. She will be debuting new material with John Fio on baritone sax.
Abby Dobson
Sonic conceptual performing artist/composer Abby Dobson offers her signature sound of Soul/R&B, jazz and folk that erases musical boundaries. She credits her experiences as an artist with sparking a deep interest in scholarship that speaks to black female artists as culture workers/knowledge producers. Combining musicians from Wayne Horvitz’s two long standing quartets, The Gravitas Quartet and Sweeter Than the Day, Some Places are Forever Afternoon is a suite of instrumental songs based on 11 poems by iconic Northwest poet Richard Hugo.
Composer, pianist, and keyboardist Wayne Horvitz is the leader of Sweeter Than the Day, Zony Mash, The 4 Plus 1 Ensemble, the Gravitas Quartet and co-founder of the New York Composer Orchestra. A prolific composer, he has been commissioned by the Seattle Chamber Players, the Icicle Creek Trio, Kronos, Meet The Composer, BAM and others. Collaborations include work with Paul Taylor, Gus Van Sant, Butch Morris, John Zorn and many others. He has produced CDs for Eddie Palmieri, Fontella Bass, Robin Holcomb and Bill Frisell among others. He is the recipient of numerous awards including the 2008 NEA American Masterpieces Award, the 2003, 2011, and 2014 Map Fund and the McKnight Visiting Composers Award.

Explosive festejos and introspective landós are the cornerstones of the Afro-Peruvian Jazz Orchestra (APJO). New York is a city that simmers with Big Bands and in this environment the APJO contributes a noticeably new sound dedicated to exploring the music of Coastal Perú in a jazz context. The orchestra’s founder is saxophonist Laura Andrea Leguía.
The orchestra’s repertoire centers on Leguía’s compositions and arrangements. The orchestra is conducted by Dr. Gabriel Alegría and features master percussionist Freddy “Huevito” Lobatón and Afro-Peruvian guitarist Yuri Juárez. The fusion of Afro-Peruvian folklore and modern orchestration gives audiences a new sound: one that is at once African, Andean and American.
This 17-piece big band was formed in 2013 by pianist, composer and arranger Liberté-Anne Lymberiou. This modern, multi-generational ensemble plays compositions by Lymberiou and her contemporaries. As it’s name would indicate, the band’s broad mission is to constantly perform new works while maintaining the all-encompassing creativity and communality of the jazz tradition.
Greatly influenced by Charles Mingus, Lymberiou captures the spontaneity and unpredictability of jazz through extended compositions. The moods of her music swing as much as the rhythms do, and inevitably move her audiences, both inside and out. “Liberté-Anne is the real deal. She exudes creativity, chance taking and originality.
