New York City organist/pianist Brian Charette has established himself as a leading voice in modern jazz. Charette is a Grammy-nominated, Hammond-endorsed artist who was the winner of the 2014 Downbeat Critics’ Poll in the “Rising Star: Organ” category and has climbed to 4th place in The 2015 Critic’s Poll in the main Organ category. This year Brian also won The Hot House Magazine Fan’s Decision Jazz Award for Best Organist in New York and had three releases on the Jazz Week Top 20.

Winner of five Grammy and three Latin Grammy Awards, the Cuban pianist, composer and arranger Chucho Valdés is one of the most influential figures in modern Afro-Cuban jazz. For this unique performance at Town Hall, Valdés celebrates the 40th anniversary of his original groundbreaking ensemble Irakere. One of the most important bands in the history of Latin jazz, Irakere’s members included artists such as Arturo Sandoval and Paquito D’Rivera, who eventually became solo stars in their own right. An evening of sounds extracted from objects, uncanny instruments, and recordings transformed into performance.
veRmulsCHt presents a living performance diary with sounds and sights. This haphazard trio from Berlin improvises with video projections, field recordings, laptops, objects, saxophones, and spoken texts—most of which are collected during the group’s trips through the universe.
Ashcan Orchestra is the audio/visual work of composer Pat Spadine; a large collection of toy, re-appropriated, and “real” instruments; and a revolving performance ensemble based in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Since 2007 the ensemble has been employing everything from children’s handbells, prepared tape recorders, stacks of discarded televisions, homemade circuitry, colored lightbulbs, and mirrors, to more widely accepted noisemakers, creating new music to both celebrate and emulate the physics that bind the known universe.
Red Metal is the newest music / performance / ritual project from Brooklyn reed weirdo Patrick Breiner. They sure look cute on paper, don’t they? Look closely. These cuties draw blood. Marc Cary’s “Harlem Sessions,” which takes place every Thursday night at the New York City speakeasy Gin Fizz, continues to gain ground in the community that the keyboardist-composer-bandleader calls home, and where he’s emerging as a leader committed to the values of the Harlem Renaissance pioneers such as Langston Hughes and Duke Ellington, in the spirit of providing fresh lifeblood to Harlem’s unique and vibrant cultural scene.
Cary began hosting the late night jam session in May, opening it to musicians, poets, rappers, dancers and comedians, and announcing the song menu in advance via social media, to develop an organic and crucial cutting ground for artists. It’s a celebration of local artists, groups and composers who truly brought a melting pot of influences together; take a song like “Harlem River Drive” (by pianist Eddie Palmieri‘s super group), cultivate it, and that typifies what this session is about and how deeply its local roots grow.
Cary’s longtime rhythm section features Rashaan Carter on bass and Sameer Gupta on drums/tabla.

I welcome all my musician, poet, artist, philosopher, and dancer friends to our late night Harlem Hang.
This is not your ordinary jam session. Each week, we aim to build and explore a new common repertoire with original arrangements in the live arena through ensemble work.
We will cover a wide span of music, from the performers and composers who developed this music, to our modern day peers. This will be a celebration of some of the greatest Black and American composers of our time and of our heritage.
In the spirit of all the creativity that came before us here in Harlem, we want to create new standards as community.

RAYA BRASS BAND. Soul Shaking, Border Defying Brass from NYC – Since 2008 Raya Brass Band has energized clubs, international festivals, rooftop parties, and subway cars with its hard-driving, original brass band music. The six members of the band bring their unique voices to the group, creating a sound informed as much by their love for the fierce and seductive music of the Balkans as it is by New Orleans brass bands, punk rock, and global music. Featuring trumpet, sax, accordion, tuba, and percussion, the group wails, sweats, stomps and shouts with its enthusiastic crowds.
WEST PHILADELPHIA ORCHESTRA – With a diverse line-up of professional Philadelphia musicians whose influences range from Sun Ra to Bulgarian brass bands, West Philadelphia Orchestra is a unique live ensemble in today’s auto-tuned musical world. They began playing Romanian ballads, Macedonian folk-dance songs, Bulgarian wedding music, and Klezmer in late 2006, and have continued expanding their repertoire of Eastern European music. The band also plays original tunes which blend other sounds, like jazz and classical, together with traditional Balkan sounds. As much a community as a band, WPO’s performances are celebratory events. With blistering beats and walls of brass, they inspire audiences to hold hands, gyrate, howl, and otherwise slip the yoke of their inhibitions.

Growing up in New York’s Lower East Side and coming from an artistic family, Zack Glass was exposed to a wide variety of music from an early age. After high school Zack had the opportunity to travel to West Africa and Latin America several times which greatly influenced his music and led him to play guitar for Reggae and African bands as well as accompanying a steel pan player from time to time. He started his own reggae band and was writing and singing his own songs, but by the end of the 90’s he started to see the limitations of Reggae and began to explore world music. Soon after, he took a leap of faith and began a solo career.
Zack’s first album, Days of Innocence, was recorded in Brazil where he lived for three years. He currently spends half his time in Brazil, where he performs and records and half his time in New York where he does the same. Zack has already had the honor to share the stage with some of this century’s greatest musicians; Steve Earle, Keb’ Mo’, Patti Smith, Suzanne Vega, Al MacDowell, Andrew Sterman and Eddie Bobe. Zack has also had the pleasure to perform with some of todays up and coming stars; Vampire Weekend, The National, and Jazz Trumpeter Mark Rapp. He is in the process of recording his 2nd album, Southern Skies, an eclectic album infusing many different styles.

Roswell Rudd, 1935, aka THE INCREDIBLE HONK, is a musical wiz if ever a wiz there waz.
His musical range has expresssed itself in extraordinary musical collaborations and subsequent recordings with musicians from Mali (Toumani Diabate), Mongolia (Buryat Band), the great Puerto Rican cuatrista Yomo Toro, and the brilliant Cuban guitarist/singer David Oquendo. He has performed and recorded with all of the bands performing at this unique musical event.
In 2000 he was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in composition.
In August 2010 he was voted #1 in the Downbeat Critics Poll
In 2003, 2004, 2005, 2009 and 2010 he was voted Trombonist of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association.
