Ay Mayo! is a New York based afro-colombian percussion group dedicated to perpetuating folkloric traditions of song, drumming and dance as communion and celebration of life. Their music has roots in the oral and acoustic traditions born of the fusion of African, European and Pre-Colombian Indigenous ancestry!!
The Afro Roots series, in which a great variety of artists from Africa, its diaspora and extended family, will be featured every other Tuesday night.
Kevin Nathaniel, the curator for this amazing night, is a world music pioneer, has been a vital cultural influence on the New York City music scene since the 80’s and continuing. Hailing musically from an ancient master-disciple tradition, Kevin is a virtuoso percussionist and well-known specialist for various traditional African instruments and musical styles, especially mbira and shekere. He tours nationally and internationally as a solo artist, as well as with varous bands including Spirit Ensemble, Heritage OP, Kaleidhaphonic, and Afara. He worked extensively with Zimbabwe’s mbira legend Ephat Mujuru, and with master drummer Chief Bey.

CHOP AND QUENCH, “The Fela! Band”, is comprised of members of the cast and band of FELA! the musical. Individually, the musicians are some of the finest in New York, having performed with The Roots, India Arie, Elvis Costello, and many others. Lead singer Sahr Ngaujah was nominated for a TONY Award for his performance in the Broadway show and has been featured on film and television. As a unit, the band has gotten to accompany performers such as Beyonce, Femi Kuti, and Angelique Kidjo. Known for their straightforward performances of classic Fela Kuti compositions, they have branched out, bringing their own original music to the stage. After performing around the world, they recently performed at the Sundance Film Festival in conjunction with the premier of Alex Gibney’s film “Finding Fela”. They are now back home in New York preparing new material to take into the studio for their first recording since the Fela! Broadway cast recording, and looking forward to starting a weekly Monday night residency at the Knitting Factory in Brooklyn.
Best known for his work with Antibalas and Blitz The Ambassador, Raja Kassis has just released his Debut album entitled HUMANBEING (Ropeadope Records, September 2014). He has recorded and performed with the likes of Damian Marley, Angelique Kidjo, Seun Anikulapo Kuti, Allen Toussaint among many others. Kassis brings not just a show, but an experience. Featuring master Sengalese Musicians to some of New York City’s finest, the experience is a high energy journey from start to finish, with the most unexpected turns.

Pianist, composer, and educator Jeremy Siskind originally from Irvine, CA, now living in NYC earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Eastman and his Master’s in English and Comparative Literature from Columbia, and studies piano with Sophia Rosoff and Fred Hersh. Siskind performs around the world as a leader and sideman. Since the 2010 release of Simple Songs, Siskind’s first CD on Brooklyn Jazz Underground Records, he placed 2nd in the Montreux Jazz Festival Solo Piano Competition, was a runner-up for the American Pianist Association’s Cole Porter Fellowship, performed at Carnegie Hall, has had his book, Jazz Etude Inspirations, published by Hal Leonard, and has become the musical director for Sandra Bernhard.

Rather, they achieve unity of vision without relying on easily identifiable tropes.

The New Mellow Edwards is a quartet that defies traditional jazz conventions and favors primal garage rock-derived grooves, textural explorations and classically-influenced structures. The repertoire of the group can be humorous, dark, accessible and exciting, often simultaneously. Trombonist/composer Curtis Hasselbring put the group together in 2002 and the band has consistently featured the line up of Chris Speed (clarinet and saxophone), Trevor Dunn (bass) and John Hollenbeck (drums). The band has three recordings out, the first self-titled record (2006), their second, Big Choantza in 2009 (both on Skirl Records) and 2013’s Number Stations (Cuneiform) featuring an expanded version of the group.
Seven Suns is string quartet + percussion and vocals named after apocalyptic Buddhist prophecy. The sound of Seven Suns is, by turns, driven, aggressive, dissonant and hard-edged as well as contemplative, meditative, still and serene. It is rooted in the proletariat music of recent generations, such as punk and hardcore, as well as the Western classical tradition. We play the works of our members in addition to that of composers like Shostakovich, Crumb, Rzewski, Pärt, and Bach, whose music embodies spiritual introspection or social criticism.

PitchBlak Brass Band is a Brooklyn-based 10-piece band whose style and sound represent hip-hop from the 1980s to present day. Exact Change Project is a live hip-hop band from New York City. Their musical vision was born in Queens, New York City, but the idea truly came to fruition in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where the group recorded their debut album “Escape Capsule.”
