Marc Ribot was born in Newark, New Jersey in 1954. As a teen, he played guitar in various garage bands while studying with his mentor, Haitian classical guitarist and composer Frantz Casseus. After moving to New York City in 1978, Ribot was a member of the soul/punk Realtones, and from 1984 – 1989, of John Lurie’s Lounge Lizards. Between 1979 and 1985, Ribot also worked as a sidemusician with Brother Jack McDuff, Wilson Pickett, Carla Thomas, Rufus Thomas, Chuck Berry, and many others.
A free/punk/funk/experimental/psychedelic/post electronica collective, featuring Marc Ribot plus two young players on the New York/California underground improv/experimental rock scene, Shahzad Ismaily – bass/electronics (Will Oldham, Secret Chiefs 3, Jolie Holland, 2 Foot Yard) and Ches Smith – drums (Xiu Xiu, Good for Cows, Secret Chiefs 3).

Arturo O’Farrill, pianist, composer, educator and winner of the Latin Jazz USA Outstanding Achievement Award for 2003, was born in Mexico and grew up in New York City. In 2002, Mr. O’Farrill created the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra for Jazz at Lincoln Center due in part to a large and very demanding body of substantial music in the genre of Latin and Afro Cuban Jazz that deserves to be much more widely appreciated and experienced by the general jazz audience. His debut album with the Orchestra “Una Noche Inolvidable” earned a GRAMMY award nomination in 2006.

RED BARAAT. Led by drummer Sunny Jain, Red Baraat is the first and only dhol ‘n’ brass band of its kind in the States, melding the infectious North Indian rhythm Bhangra with brass funk and expressing the human spirit through improvisation and a powerful live sound. Comprised of dhol (double-sided, barrel-shaped North Indian drum slung over one shoulder), drumset, percussion, sousaphone, horns, and various vocalese, this NYC-based group plays fresh originals and Bollywood classics with an explosive stage performance and presence. An evening of transcendent acoustic jazz, world folk, chamber music and blues with three world class improvisers.
The seeds of Promised Land, the trio of pianist Myra Melford (Leroy Jenkins, Marty Erlich), acoustic guitarist Brandon Ross (Cassandra Wilson, Meshell Ndegeocello, Harriet Tubman) and acoustic bass guitarist Stomu Takeishi (Henry Threadgill, Paul Motian), were sown in the early spring of 2006, during a European tour of southern Spain. It was an unexpected configuration that proved to be flexible, dynamic, fluid and fun—inspiring a second tour and now, four years later, the inception of a new ensemble called Promised Land.
The music the trio creates represents a kind of modern chamber music for improvisers. Informed by world folk music, jazz, chamber music, blues and the pure elegance of song, it is American music hatched from the spirit of our times. Pastoral, restless, poignant and multidimensional—when listening to the interaction of the trio, a sound, both original and personal, is clearly heard. Promised Land is an open musical experience, a place where dreams manifest reality.

The Alphabet Lounge Band was co-founded in 1999 by Roy Nathanson and Deidre Rodman. It started out as a small group playing jazz at venerated downtown venue The Knitting Factory every Monday night, trying out new material weekly. Gradually friends started joining the ranks, and by 2001 the band had grown in size. It moved from The Knitting Factory to the Alphabet Lounge in the East Village, finally settling at Barbes a few years later.
The band is unique for its mix of free improv and charted material, originals and standards, lively banter and poignant moments.

Huun-Huur-Tu come from the former Soviet Autonomous Republic of Tuva, a sparsely settled region of grasslands, boreal forests, and mountain ridges that lies 2,500 miles east of Moscow Russia, situated at the center of Asia, north of Mongolia. This indigenous music highlights rare instruments and preserves what is arguably some of the world’s oldest form of music making. The best known genre of Tuvan music, xöömei (throat-singing), comprises what one might call a lexicon of musical onomatopoeia in which natural sounds are mimetically transformed into musical representations. Their past collaborations range from Ry Cooder to The Kronos Quartet. The current album “Eternal” is a collaboration with electronic musician & record producer Carmen Rizzo (Niyaz, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Oakenfold, Seal) to form a unique blend of ambient electronic and sonic textures compared to a Brian Eno style album. The album takes you through a lush cinematic journey of almost dream like sequences of deep happiness. Forty minutes of a thrilling ride from start to finish.

The 2nd Annual ‘Composers Play Composers’ marathon concert! Composers include Gene Pritsker, Dan Cooper, Joseph Pehrson, David Morneau, Patrick Ippolito, Robert Voisey, Kevin James, Peter Jarvis, Dave Taylor, John Clark, Jay Rozen, Richard Carrick, Patrick Grant, Hayes Greenfield, Valerie Coleman, Lynn Bechtold, Robert Dick, Franz Hackl, Milica Paranosic, Arthur Kampela, David Claman.
The event is produced by Composers Concordance, which has been in operation for twenty-six years and given exposure to hundreds of NY composers. Recently Gene Pritsker and composer colleague Dan Cooper, have taken over the direction of its concerts and are focusing on taking chamber music out of the concert hall and into club venues. The event will be broken into sets, each of which will start off with a trio composed by John Clark on horn, Gene Pritsker on electric guitar and Dan Cooper on 7 string electric bass.
The program will mix genres and instrumentation over the sets but there are some patterns that emerge across the twenty-one works. Some are based on non-western traditions: A Jewish prayer (Dave Taylor) and a Serbian folk song (Milica Paranosic). Electronic works by Lynn Bechtold, Richard Carrick and David Morneau (whose work is inspired by Shakespeare’s sonnets). Some are solo works with the composer performing on guitar, snare drum or keyboards.
Featured artists are Robert Dick (modern flute master), John Clark (horn), Valerie Coleman (of Imani winds), Arthur Kampela (recent work commissioned with the NY Philharmonic), bass trombone extraordinaire Dave Taylor and Franz Hackl’s B3+ Brass Trio.
