Dear Friends,

For those just tuning in Terry Dame’s Weird Wednesdays is a monthly music series I curate featuring instrument inventors and players of objects and musical oddities. Now entering it’s second year, each month I present two guest artists in addition to a short set of new works by me, yours truly, host and chief weirdo!

January’s guest artists include Bradford Reed playing his famous Pencilina and Theremin wizard Cornelius Loy. Start the year right and mark your calendar. This is going to be yet another amazing night of weirdness!!!

Bradford Reed is a Brooklyn based composer, performer and producer who fights and tames the idiosyncrasies of the pencilina, an original instrument of his own design. He played with King Missile III (and produced 4 of their records) and in the Blue Man Group’s original band. He’s composed for film and television including the music for the first season of Superjail! on Adult Swim and on the score for Ugly Americans’ three seasons on Comedy Central. http://www.pencilina.com/

“Cornelius Loy is an artist, musician inspired by spirituality, nature and the occult. Recording local sounds of birds, thunderstorms, and trains he creates natural atmosphere in his solo compositions featuring theremin, piano, guitar and vocals. For this event Cornelius will be playing a full theremin set!”

Time:  8pm
Venue: The Roulette (509 Atlantic Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11217)

One of the most distinctive and radically experimental voices in jazz, pianist, composer, and bandleader Matthew Shipp presents an intimate solo recital culled from the stunning masterpieces from his acclaimed 2013 solo album, Piano Sutras, released on Thirsty Ear. Starting with the bold compositions from Sutras, which has been described by The Los Angeles Times as “solo excursions dedicated to constant invention and a restless pursuit of beauty,” Shipp pursues a series of open-ended solo piano improvisations that draws on the innovations and the insights from the past through these sutras, or texts from the languages of jazz, classical, improv, and R&B. And with the singular passion of an enlightened devotee, Shipp leaps into the future with a new universal language.

A leading light of a new generation of jazz giants, Matthew Shipp developed his distinctive voice as pianist and composer as a long-time member of saxophonist David S. Ware’s quartet. Over the years, he has performed alongside the most adventurous musicians, Roscoe Mitchell, William Parker, Joe Morris, Roy Campbell, Gerald Cleaver, Daniel Carter, Ivo Perelman, and Mat Maneri, and collaborated with creative visionaries in hip-hop and electronic music, such as DJ Spooky, Beans/Antipop Consortium, and El-P. In the 1990s Shipp recorded a number of highly-regarded chamber jazz albums on the Hatology label. In 2000, Shipp assumed the position of artistic director of “The Blue Series” a jazz-focused imprint on Thirsty Ear Records. Since 2011, Shipp has been collaborating with avant-garde filmmaker Barbara Januszkiewicz on a film,The Composer with Matthew Shipp/Barb Januszkiewicz.

Monad Trio brings the collaborative affiliation of three exceptional contemporary Persian classical musicians. Maestro Hossein Alizadeh, the Iranian tar and setar virtuoso, and Pejman Hadadi, one of the most innovative Iranian percussionists, will be in New York for a unique musical event. Saba Alizadeh will join them on kamanche in this journey.

These musicians are highly adept in the Radif repertoire – the collection of ancient Iranian melodic phrases preserved through many generations of oral tradition. Combined with their respective sensibilities from Western and other world music traditions, they produce a uniquely contemporary approach to their traditional arrangements. Their deep and personal relationship of many years further augments the intimate and synchronous dialogue between them and their instruments.

Audience members, whether experienced or novice in the art of traditional Iranian music, are invited to surrender to the full experience of MONAD and its ‘haal’ – a term central to the art of improvisation in Persian music, which refers to being present to…fully immersed in…or even getting totally lost in the heart of the feeling and spirit of the performers. Being witness to the impressive quality of these highly accomplished masters leads those present on a mystical journey through some of the most distinguished artistry in the world.

Zach Glass with Cat Cosmai, Stephen Alexander Band, Policemen in Pickups

Growing up in New York’s Lower East Side and coming from an artistic family, Zack Glass was exposed to a wide variety of music from an early age.  By the time he turned 13, he had taken up piano and electric guitar and was beginning to write his own songs. Listening to classic rock and punk music at a young age, his taste changed when he started going through his parent’s record collection and discovered an array of music including Reggae and African. After high school Zack had the opportunity to travel to West Africa and Latin America several times which greatly influenced his music and led him to play guitar for Reggae and African bands as well as accompanying a steel pan player from time to time. He started his own reggae band and was writing and singing his own songs, but by the end of the 90’s he started to see the limitations of Reggae and began to explore world music. Soon after, his band broke up and he started his solo career. Since then, Zack has explored almost every style of popular music most recently being influenced by folk, country and classic rhythm and blues.  Zack has now come full circle; returning to the blues based music he grew up on.  Zack’s first album, Days of Innocence, was recorded in Brazil where he lived from 2003-2006. He currently spends half his time in Brazil, where he performs and records and half his time in New York where he does the same. He has recently released his 2nd cd  Southern Skies  which was picked up by an independent label. This cd proves to be an eclectic fusion of different styles.
