With a voice that can caress or confront, embrace or exhort, Gregory Porter exhibits such an incredible degree of vocal mastery, that no less a jazz luminary than Wynton Marsalis has gone on record to call him “a fantastic young singer.” Born in Los Angeles, raised in Bakersfield, and now residing in Bedstuy, Brooklyn, Gregory Porter has made the world his musical home. A frequent guest performer with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Porter also maintains a long-standing residency at Harlem’s venerable St. Nick’s Pub and performs internationally. In November of last year Gregory was nominated for a Grammy for Best Jazz Vocalist. The results will be forthcoming on February 15.

Pete Drungle is an acclaimed composer, pianist and sound designer who lives and works in NYC; Pete has made music with Ornette Coleman, The Kronos Quartet, Yoko Ono, Ronald Shannon Jackson, The Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Sean Lennon, Craig Harris, Daniel Carter and many others. Drungle has created scores for theater, film, TV, and several works for dance – including Sarah Michelson’s DOVER BEACH (cited as Best of 2009 by Art Forum, TimeOut NY, and The New York Times). He has collaborated with visual and performance artists Marianne Vitale, Michael Portnoy, Agathe Snow, and many others. As a pianist, Drungle is an intrepid, adventurous improviser – possibly best exemplified by his 24-HOUR CONTINUOUS SOLO PIANO IMPROVISATION (2007).

Gang of Four are an English post-punk group from Leeds. Original personnel were singer Jon King, guitarist Andy Gill, bass guitarist Dave Allen and drummer Hugo Burnham. They were fully active from 1977 to 1984, and then re-emerged twice in the 1990s with King and Gill. In 2004, the original line-up reunited but in November 2006 Allen was replaced on bass by Thomas McNeice and Burnham on drums by Mark Heaney. They play a stripped-down mix of punk rock, with strong elements of funk music, minimalism and dub reggae and an emphasis on the social and political ills in society.

Avant-garde composer and multi-instrumentalist Rhys Chatham has reached legendary status in experimental music circles. The Paris-based, New York-born composer began as a classically-trained prodigy, but by 1975, Chatham was fusing the overtone-drenched minimalism of John Cale and Tony Conrad with the relentless, elemental intensity of the Ramones. He is perhaps best known most recently for high-profile productions of his resplendent symphonies for hundreds of electric guitars, works which certify Chatham’s position on the front lines of post-minimalist and contemporary music.
For this concert, Chatham takes up the trumpet and joins forces with guitarist David Daniell and drummer Ryan Sawyer. Chatham deploys extended playing techniques inherited from bastions of free jazz – Don Cherry, Bill Dixon – as well as leaders of the minimalist movement – Tony Conrad, Jon Hassell, La Monte Young. Live processing of the instrument through a host of electronic devices gives rise to an ebullient cascade of sound and a truly unique and personal voice, carrying forward Chatham’s life-long pursuit of fusing the textural intricacies of the avant-garde with the visceral punch of punk rock

Leandro Barbieri (born on November 28, 1932 in Rosario, Santa Fe Province, Argentina) better known as Gato Barbieri (Spanish for “Barbieri the Cat”) is an Argentine jazz tenor saxophonist and composer who rose to fame during the free jazz movement in the 1960s and from his latin jazz recordings in the 1970s.
Though he continued to record and perform into the 1980s, the death of his wife Michelle led him to withdraw from the public arena. He returned to recording and performing in the late 1990s, playing music that would fall into the arena of smooth jazz. his music of the sound track for the film Seven Servants by Daryush Shokof earned him great ratings in Billboard magazine as the top Jazz sound tracks and Jazz music in 1997

Martin Bisi, a New York indie rock performer and record producer has been at a crossroads of indie/punk, avant garde, noire/cabaret rock, and electronic music since the early 80’s. In his live performances he combines indie rock songs with theatrical story-telling and unique sound layering that can be ambient and spacious, as well as beautifully chaotic – an ’80’s New York art-rock original. In the last 2 years he has released a full-length album, Sirens Of The Apocalypse, and a digital-only EP, Son Of A Gun, which features guests Bill Laswell, Brian Viglione of The Dresden Dolls, and Bob D’Amico (Fiery Furnaces, Sebadoh)
Martin Bisi’s regular collaborators are DJ Butterface, Shawn Setaro, Billy Atwell, Brian Viglione, Ajda Snyder, John Keith and Sohrab Saadat Ladjevardi.
Besides Martin Bisi check out: NOVELLER is the solo project of Brooklyn-based guitarist and filmmaker Sarah Lipstate. She has performed in Rhys Chatham’s Guitar Army, and as a member of Glenn Branca’s 100 guitar ensemble. A legendary keyboardist Al Kooper appeared on Dylan’s peak albums, “Highway 61 Revisted” (Like A Rolling Stone) and “Blonde on Blonde”, as well as producing “New Morning” for Dylan in 1970. He toured as a member of Dylan’s band off and on over the years. He was a member of the influential group, The Blues Project 1965-1967 and formed Blood Sweat & Tears in 1967 remaining for their debut album,”Child Is Father To The Man.” Kooper was the principal songwriter for both bands. He appeared on and produced the platinum “Super Session” album with legendary guitarists Mike Bloomfield and Stephen Stills.
