A special night developed quite naturally out of the contrasting, yet complementary, organizational methods and performing forces employed by the composers, David First and Pat Spadine to realize their ultimately very like-minded goals. This will be an evening of immersive sonics and porous media interaction that will utilize the full extent of Roulette’s technical capabilities as well as the entirety of its physical space. Both groups will present self-contained works from their unique repertoires as well as a collaboration created by First and Spadine for the combined ensembles.

An evening of innovative new jazz from artists from New York and Japan, led by the Japanese-born, Brooklyn-based trumpeter and composer Takuya Kuroda. Kuroda is a powerhouse talent, whose writing has been praised as “effortlessly bridging the gap between jazz and soul, between history and tomorrow.” This performance marks the release of Kuroda’s widely-anticipated Blue Note debut CD, Rising Son — a fitting title for the work of a musician on the ascent.

Since 1997 the Éthiopiques series has made Ethiopian music a hipster obsession, exposing jazz heads and rockists to the jazzy funkiness that emanated from East Africa in the ’60s and ’70s. (Never heard of the collection? You may have heard songs from Volume 4—there are now 28 volumes in total—in Jim Jarmusch’s 2005 film Broken Flowers.) At Drom on Jan 11 for the Electric Cowbell and Barbes APAP showcase listeners will get a chance to hear a sliver of those tunes live in a performance by Washington, D.C.’s The Feedel Band. The group features saxophonist Moges Habte, who was born in Addis Ababa, and can be heard performing the funky James Brown Band-influenced cut “Muziqawi Silt” on Éthiopiques’ Volume 13 with his ’70s group The Walias Band. The group is currently working with DC-based producer Thomas Gobena-known for his work as the bass player in Gogol Bordello and his production of another Globalfest wonder-Debo Band-on a new full-length for Electric Cowbell Records. Feedel Band’s sound can best be described as a merging of ’60s R&B and jazz with traditional Ethiopian songcraft.

Sometimes a simple comment made in passing becomes the seed that blossoms into a beautiful idea. Operatic soprano Pamela Olsen confided to her husband, pianist Eric Olsen, that Lou Caimano’s alto playing reminded her of an opera singer. This suggestion became the concept for Dyad Plays Puccini: re-imagining Puccini’s most beautiful classical compositions as contemporary jazz arrangements. With that, a new musical adventure for the Dyad partnership was born, fusing the two streams of classical and jazz music. In DYAD Plays Puccini, Olsen and Caimano bring ten timeless Puccini melodies into the 21st century with grace, style, virtuosity, and originality.
