On January 12 2010, HAITI has been devastated by an earthquake, and today we all must support the rehabilitation of their lives!

Jazz impresario George Wein (founder of the Newport Jazz Festival, Newport Folk Festival, and New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival) projects images from his extensive historic photo album, shares anecdotes about a life lived in jazz, and welcomes leading jazz artists who perform a set on stage in the intimate Leonard Nimoy Thalia.

Sweet Electra is a well-known band in Guadalajara and Mexico City, Mexico that recently moved to New York to take their music to the next level and to new audiences.

 

Sweet Electra is about to celebrate the release of their third album, When We Abandoned Earth, (Release; April 6, 2010). Unlike the past albums, When We Abandoned Earth is sung in English and Spanish only. The album is full of emotional and memorable experiences making it nostalgic, dramatic and a spacey orchestral pop dream. They will share the stage with: Riot Paris, The American UK, Greg Smith and the Broken English & WarHorse.

 

Sweet Electra, made up of duo Nardiz Cooke on vocals and Giovanni Escalera on keyboards, guitars and programming, is bringing electronica-twinged pop to New York. Their newest single A Feeling mixes various elements to create a celestial experience, all drizzled in pop.

5. Altan

Formed in County Donegal by singer/fiddler Mairéad Ni Mhaonaigh and the late Frankie Kennedy, Altan is one of Ireland’s foremost purveyors of traditional Celtic music. The group celebrates its 25th anniversary this year with the release of Altan: 25th Anniversary Celebration (Compass Records). Recorded with the RTE Concert Orchestra, it’s a mix of the band’s favorite songs from over the last quarter century.

6. Fargana and Alim Qasimov: Spiritual Music from the World of Islam

Alim Qasimov, Azerbaijan’s best-known and most beloved singer, and his daughter Fargana Qasimov bring a charged charisma and transcendent vocal quality to performances of classical mugham and songs from the bardic ashiq tradition. The Qasimovs are accompanied by a quartet of virtuosic instrumentalists playing tar, kamancha, balaban, and hand drums. The Qasimovs last appeared in New York at the 2009 Lincoln Center Festival as members of Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble.

7. Zakir Hussain‘s Masters of Percussion

Two nights of dazzling drumming and exquisite melody with the peerless tabla superstar Zakir Hussain and his ensemble of virtuoso artists from India’s classical and folk traditions! The legendary percussionist, whose intoxicating rhythms have accompanied India’s major artists and leading names in world music, is joined by drummers Taufiq Qureshi, Navin Sharma, Sridar Parthsarathy and the Motilal Dhakis from Bengal, as well as sarangi (lute) player Sabir Khan and the superb violin duo of Ganesh and Kumaresh.

BURKINA ELECTRIC is the first electronica band from Burkina Faso, in the deep interior of West Africa. Based in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso’s capital, it is, at the same time, an international band, with members living in New York, U.S.A. and Düsseldorf, Germany, as well as in Ouaga. Burkina Electric’s music combines the traditions and rhythms of Burkina Faso with contemporary electronic dance culture, making it a trailblazer in electronic world music. This diverse and talented group consists of four musicians and two dancers who collectively participate in the creative process and represent disparate musical genres and sounds from across the globe.
