Immerse yourself in the glorious traditions of Tibet and India from April 4-15 in the Winter Garden at Brookfield Place!
The first week kicks-off with extraordinary sacred music and dance with The Mystical Arts of Tibet featuring the Tibetan Monks from Drepung Loseling Monastery. Watch throughout the week as they create a magnificent mandala sand painting created with millions of grains of colored sands. The week will conclude with a full performance by the Monks of the Drepung Loseling Monastery on Friday night and a fascinating closing ceremony for the sand mandala with a procession to the Hudson river on Saturday.
Week two of Transcendent Arts of Tibet and India brings the ancient Bharatanatyam dance tradition of South India to the Winter Garden alongside daily performances of North and South Indian classical vocal and instrumental art forms. Friday night’s closing event will be a superb dance performance with live musicians on the center staircase, in the round.

See You Next Today is a collaborative musical project with roots in rock, classical, punk, ambient, folk, and jazz.
Trumpeter Nate Wooley’s solo playing has often been cited as being a part of an international revolution in improvised trumpet. Along with Peter Evans and Greg Kelley, Wooley is considered one of the leading lights of the American movement to redefine the physical boundaries of the horn. A combination of vocalization, extreme extended technique, noise and drone aesthetics, amplification and feedback, and compositional rigor has led one reviewer to call his solo recordings “exquisitely hostile”. Wooley has performed regularly with such icons as John Zorn, Anthony Braxton, Eliane Radigue, Ken Vandermark, Fred Frith, Evan Parker, and Yoshi Wada.
David Watson performs as a guitarist and/or highland bagpiper. His recent significant musical partnerships include the trio Tipple -with Frode Gjerstad and Kevin Norton, Yoshi Wada, Alex
Waterman, Phill Niblock, Che Chen, Ikue Mori, Lee Ranaldo, Shelley Hirsch, Tony Buck, and Sean Meehan. In 2015 he made two full-length scores for choreographer Moriah Evans at Issue Project Room and Danspace. He has an ongoing project creating non-traditional processions and parades.
Peter Zummo studied with John Cage as well as jazz musicians like Ken McIntyre and Sam Rivers. Known for his collaboration with Arthur Russell, the quintessential “Downtown” musician who worked in song, minimalism, disco, contemporary chamber and country & western styles. After Russell’s death in 1992 Zummo wrote for dance companies and collaborated with musicians as diverse as Phill Niblock, Pauline Oliveros, The Lounge Lizards and fellow Staten Islander, Vernon Reid.

Hanna Barakat is a Lebanese-American singer, with a songwriting degree from Berklee College of Music ’10. Hanna has always been very influenced and inspired by hard rock and popular music styles. Lauren Lee is a forward-thinking vocalist, pianist, and composer based in New York City. A native of the St. Louis (MO) metropolitan area. Her interest in jazz and contemporary classical music lead her to New York University in 2009 to begin a Master of Music in Jazz Studies. By studying under greats like Kenny Werner and Gil Goldstein, she began to find a compositional and improvisational voice of her own. Since graduation, she’s continued to find her voice with both of her ensembles: The Velocity Duo, a completely improvised electro-acoustic bass and voice duet project; and her “Space Jazz” trio, which focuses on her classical and singer-songwriter flavored jazz compositions. The trio’s album, “The Consciousness Test”, set to release in Spring 2016.

Sometimes a year gets out of hand. At the end of 2014 Skye Steele finished work on his first solo album, Up From The Bitterroot, and hit the road playing DIY shows all over a country, over 100 to date. In between his own tours this year he found time to collaborate on violin with Vanessa Carlton, Jolie Holland, Deer Tick, and Bollywood superstar Arijit Singh. In the midst of all this, Skye snuck away to LA for a few days of writing and recording with producer/guitarist Cassorla (Dawes, Blitzen Trapper, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros), who he shared an apartment in Harlem with in the early 2000’s.
Take Me On the first taste of this new collaboration, was premiered by Paste in December– combining Steele’s frank, unaffected vocals and lush violin work with mellotron and a deep drum machine groove. The combination is as infectious as it is heartfelt, and the two have now dived head-first into recording a full-length, whose songs Skye will preview tonight.

Poet and vocalist LaTasha N. Nevada Diggs is quite familiar with staging tributes to trailblazers like Gil Scott-Heron, Sekou Sundiata, and Miriam Makeba with stellar lineups and ensembles. In this Lincoln Center commission, Diggs joins electro-acoustic keyboard wizard and composer Marc Cary to respond and pay homage to the artistic legacy of poet Jayne Cortez (1934–2012). How does one reimagine a force like Cortez, whose innovative works rooted in activism, the African Diaspora, and music blurred the lines between surrealism and the Black Arts Movement? Drawing from multiple musical forms, minimalism, and breath, Diggs and Cary hope to begin their journey into a visceral answer to this question. Joining them will be members of Cary’s Focus Trio with Rashaan Carter on bass and Sameer Gupta on drums and tablas, along with surprise guests.

Spellbinding improvisations in Persian classical music will be performed by the celebrated Maestro Hossein Alizadeh, a virtuoso of the tar and setar lutes, and Pejman Hadadi one of the most innovative Iranian percussionists. Alizadeh, considered one of the most important figures in contemporary Persian music, has had a successful solo career, performing both in Iran and throughout North America, Europe and Asia. He was the conductor and soloist in the Iranian National Orchestra of Radio and Television, established the acclaimed Aref Ensemble, and worked with the Shayda Ensemble. The legendary Iranian modernist poet, singer, songwriter, composer, and filmmaker, Shahyar Ghanbari, known primarily as the founder of the New Wave of Iranian modern songwriting with an impassioned cult following, is perhaps better described as the most distinctive voice of contemporary Iranian pop/rock music. Shahyar has written hundreds of innovative lyrics for major Iranian singers and his original and unique lyrics are indeed the principal reason for the success of singers such as Farhad, Googoosh and Dariush. Singing in Persian, English, and French, Shahyar Ghabari has also released 11 solo albums by which he has earned not only critical praise but also massive popular attention that places him in a situation almost unique in the Iranian cultural scene.
Raphael Brunn, is a Flamenco Guitarist and Composer. His public debut playing Flamenco guitar was in the opening festivities of the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. Since then, Raphael has performed with many of the artists who initially inspired his dedication to the Flamenco tradition. He worked with El Farruquito and El Torombo in the Flamenco production of Incognito, in Frankfurt, Germany. Now based in New York City, Raphael performs with various Flamenco artists and is currently working on his second CD.
