Join the Eco-Music Big Band in a tribute to its founder, Fred Ho (August 10, 1957 – April 12, 2014)
– one of a kind revolutionary composer, writer, producer, political activist, and the “best baritone saxophonist of all time” (The New Yorker). This tribute program will honor Fred’s legacy, including his last big band work, The Grace of the Guerilla, My Love, the music of Cal Massey, and new works by Fred Ho’s students, Ben Barson and Marie Incontrera.
The Eco-Music Big Band is a 16-piece professional free jazz political big band that spans many generations and includes some of the nation’s most acclaimed jazz musicians. Hailed as “talented… inspiring” (The Vermont Standard), The Eco-Music Big Band is committed to presenting the music of the legendary jazz composers of the 20th century that were overlooked (such as Cal Massey), to continuing the legacy of the prodigious composer Fred Ho, and to providing a platform for the next generation of big band composers.
Fred Ho passed away on the morning of Saturday, April 12, 2014 in his home in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, ending an eight year battle with stage 4B metastatic colorectal cancer. He is survived by his mother and two sisters, Florence Houn and Flora Hoffman. He leaves behind a legendary body of musical work; a revolutionary political movement, Scientific Soul Sessions; two big bands; and a distinct Afro-Asian aesthetic.
There will be no funeral; Fred will be cremated and his ashes will be spread over the sea of Kauai, where he will swim forever with the coral reefs. A memorial is being organized for a later date.

On 4/24 through 4/26 people around the globe will celebrate the 60th birthday of political prisoner MUMIA ABU-JAMAL while demanding his freedom. In NYC at Riverside Church on Thursday the 24th from 6:30 – 9:30 pm, many celebrated speakers and artists will make some very revolutionary statements in the face of this ongoing struggle for justice. The list of speakers has not yet been finalized but the live music will include the Liberation Jazz of THE RED MICROPHONE – 8PM, and several noted radical Hip Hop artists SQUALA ORPHAN the LC POET at 8:15. INTIKANA at 8:45, and of course REBEL DIAZ at 9pm. And the show ends with a big jam session of all performers. Mumia himself is expected to call in to speak to us all at 7:30. Please join us to make a statement about this activist who has been wrongly imprisoned for decades.
Mumia Abu-Jamal is a renowned journalist, author, activist, husband, father and grandfather from Philadelphia who has been in prison since 1981 for allegedly shooting Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner. Despite overwhelming evidence of his innocence, prosecutorial misconduct, constitutional violations in his trial, police coercion of witnesses and documented racism, he remains on death row in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania. He is known as the “Voice of the Voiceless” for his award- winning reporting on police brutality and other social and racial epidemics that plague communities of color in Philadelphia and throughout the world. Mumia has received international support over the years in his efforts to overturn his unjust conviction and continues to fight from death row.

The Future Scares Me is the brainchild of singer and composer Sonia Szajnberg (Shine-berg) and keyboardist and composer Eli Sundelson. They founded the band in 2012 based on their mutual love for rock, electronic music, and jazz and their mutual fear of all things yet to come. Together, with drummer David Christian (Hospitality, Opsvik and Jennings) they make music that draws from a wide palette of textures, harmonies and influences.
Making loneliness an art since the summer of 2012, Connecticut’s Verdigrls (formerly known as Velveteens) are a young and deeply unconventional band who set out to form their musical identities. Sisters Anna and Catherine Wolk are both classically trained in violin and cello respectively. Catherine’s obsessions with 60’s girl groups and Morrissey with sprinkled elements of The Raincoats, along with Anna’s strong background in classical theory and both their fascination with electronic music have come together to make something slightly odd and idiosyncratic. Along with their poetic lyricism, haunting harmonies and unusual instrumentation, they form a captivating sound.

This spring, Nublu Records is proud to announce the release of Ilhan Ersahin’s WONDERLAND The Other Side adding to the canon of Nublu experiments, Ersahin salutes Turkish traditional gypsy sounds via his eclectic modern touch to “the music of now”. Wonderland’s sensuous chill-out sound is infused with a languorous arabesque essence and tinged with opiated dub effects.
The story behind this very special record involves sessions held over a span of a number of years between friends, collaborators and acquaintances. Spearheaded by Ilhan Ersahin on saxophone and Wurlitzer electric piano and clarinet master Husnu Senlendirici, the project coalesces behind the vocals of three famous vocalists: Gilberto Gil, Jane Birkin and Seyyal Taner (often described as the Tina Turner of Turkey). Along with those legendary figures, the project also features an impressive array of players exploring a gypsy/arabesque musical strain.

Born into the legendary family of gypsy violinists descended from Janos Bihari in 1965, Roby Lakatos was introduced to music as a child and made his public debut as first violinist in a gypsy band at the age of nine. He learned his craft not only within the bosom of his own family but also at the Béla Bartók Conservatory of Budapest, where he won first prize for classical violin in 1984. Since then, his career has evolved with an ever increasing number of international concerts and engagements. He has performed at all the major international festivals in Europe, the USA, Japan, South-Korea, Australia, and China. Roby Lakatos is a violinist who defies classification: his work together with his ensemble, with its unique vision of gypsy music, its talent for improvisation and its musical curiosity (across all genres) and his skill as a composer make him one of the most intriguing and accomplished musical talents in the world today.

Marbin first started in 2007 as an improvised music duo consisting of Israeli-American guitarist Dani Rabin and Israeli saxophonist Danny Markovitch. Markovitch and Rabin met shortly after Markovitch had completed his military service as an infantry sergeant and Rabin had graduated from Berklee College of Music. Since 2008, Marbin has been living in Chicago and performing all over the United States, playing over 250 shows a year with the accompaniment of drummer Justyn Lawrence and Bassist Jae Gentile . They have released four albums: Impressions of a City (2009),as part of Paul Wertico’s Mideast-Midwest Alliance, and three under the name Marbin (2009), Marbin as a duo,Breaking the Cycle (2011) with drummer Paul Wertico, bassist Steve Rodby (Pat Metheny Group), and Jamey Haddad (Paul Simon), and Last Chapter of Dreaming (2013) with its touring band and an array of thirteen guests. Marbin is currently signed to Moonjune Records and Management.
In addition to their regular schedule, Marbin toured with fusion super group Scott Henderson, Mike Clark, and Jeff Berlin in a series of venues on the east coast and the midwest. In March 2012, Marbin toured with Allan Holdsworth’s new trio that consists of Yellow Jackets’ bassist Jimmy Haslip, and drummer Virgil Donati.
CD review: Marbin’s “Last Chapter of Dreaming”…is an interesting and thought provoking collection of excellent music!
