Immerse yourself in the glorious traditions of Tibet and India from April 4-15 in the Winter Garden at Brookfield Place!
The first week kicks-off with extraordinary sacred music and dance with The Mystical Arts of Tibet featuring the Tibetan Monks from Drepung Loseling Monastery. Watch throughout the week as they create a magnificent mandala sand painting created with millions of grains of colored sands. The week will conclude with a full performance by the Monks of the Drepung Loseling Monastery on Friday night and a fascinating closing ceremony for the sand mandala with a procession to the Hudson river on Saturday.
Week two of Transcendent Arts of Tibet and India brings the ancient Bharatanatyam dance tradition of South India to the Winter Garden alongside daily performances of North and South Indian classical vocal and instrumental art forms. Friday night’s closing event will be a superb dance performance with live musicians on the center staircase, in the round.

In Rick Barry’s award-winning songs there are no secrets. Uncensored and unapologetic, Barry undercuts the rawness of his lyrics with a poetic musicality that adds infinite layers of emotional complexity to his songs. A native of Asbury Park, this “New Jersey visionary” (Star Ledger) cites Bob Dylan as his earliest influence, and there is a distinct thread of lyrical Americana that runs through his songs. His recent work, with its rich instrumentation and slowly unfurling melodies, resonates with 21st-century indie-folk artists like Sufjan Stevens, Damien Rice, or Justin Vernon (Bon Iver). Barry was also the engine behind the acclaimed Night in Progress series at the Saint, a songwriting challenge that provided a vital creative platform for artists like A Great Big World, Allie Moss, April Smith, and Val Emmich, not to mention Barry himself.

A “breathtakingly beautiful” new voice in contemporary music (Downbeat Magazine), vocalist composer Kavita Shah has been praised by NPR for her “amazing dexterity for musical languages.” A native New Yorker of Indian origin fluent in Spanish, Portuguese, and French, Shah incorporates her in-depth knowledge of diverse cultural traditions into her jazz-based repertoire, placing seemingly eclectic songs, instruments, and artists in dialogue with one another.
Shah will be performing at BRIC House with James Francies (keys),Mike Moreno (guitar), Michael Olatuja (bass), and Jeremy Dutton(drums).

Renowned animal portraitist Phil Puleo, is the drummer and hammer-dulcimer player in Swans. Cop Shoot Cop keyboardist, soundtrack composer and JG Thirlwell collaborator and mad scientist Jim Coleman will play the hurdy-gurdy, melodica and a pile of analog modules never before wired up in public. Paul Wallfisch will step away from the piano to test what happens when he plugs in a bass.
Birdthrower has crawled on hands and knees up Broadway from the Battery to Washington Heights. When he’s not crawling, he writes timelessly simple songs of love lost and found on his Teeny Genie and an acoustic guitar. Together, these four are Gaudete, named after Ted Hughes’ book-length poem he intended as a film. Gaudete just recorded 3 tracks for Martin Bisi’s 35th-anniversary celebration. This is their world premiere performance.
Cello virtuoso, storyteller, performance artist, singer and curator at Panoply Performance Laboratory and all-around iconoclastic firecracker Valerie Kuehne is a mainstay of new music in New York.

Gnawa music is a rich repertoire of spiritual healing songs and rhythms. Its well preserved heritage combines ritual poetry with traditional music and dancing. Gnawa music is performed in a “Lila,” an entire night of celebration, dedicated to healing and trance guided by Maalem Hassan Ben Jaafer and his group Innov Gnawa. Maalem, who is a one of a kind master, inherited Gnawa Music from his father Sidi Abdullah Ben Jaafer Sultan Gnawa, and will be playing alongside the young generation master Samir LanGus who learned Gnawa music in the streets of Agadir, Morocco.

In their new work DICTATORIALS, Kinan Azmeh and Erdem Helvacioglu depict the different ambiences, moods of a society under oppression. Through the use of processed sounds of electric guitar, clarinet and live performance, they create a sonic atmosphere that depicts this society through time, it’s evolution from the first days of oppression until the last days of resistance.
