During the ‘70- and ‘80’s, the Woodstock-based Creative Music Studio was considered the premier study center for contemporary creative music. Founded in 1971 by Karl Berger , Ingrid Sertso and Ornette Coleman, CMS brought together leading innovators in the jazz and world music communities. Unprecedented in its range and diversity, CMS was an acknowledged phenomenon in the international music world.
The Stone is proud to host a new series of CMS workshops in 2011: a new improviser’s workshop orchestra gets underway EVERY MONDAY NIGHT IN 2011 led by composer/pianist/vibist Karl Berger. Conducted in the tradition of the legendary Creative Music Studio (www.creativemusicstudio.org), original compositions, themes by the likes of Don Cherry, Ornette Coleman, and world musical melodies will be utilized for orchestral explorations and contrasting solo/duo/trio flights. This series supports the Creative Music Studio Archive Project.

Indo-American Arts Council & Misha Nicole present Raagas in Reflexion by versatile and multifaceted Mala Ramadorai who is the student of the great master of Gwalior Gharana, Pt. Yeshwant Bua Joshi . Having had rigorous training in the Carnatic style in her early years with Shri Ayyalore Krishnan, Mala went on to do her Masters in Hindustani Classical Music at the SNDT University. Her forte is Khayal Gayaki. Mala is continuing her exploration in Hindustani music with the renowned Pt. Satyasheel Deshpande. At the same time she continues to reacquaint herself with the intricacies of Carnatic style under the guidance of the legendary Carnatic maestro Shri. Lalgudi Jayaraman.

BZH New York is a not-for-profit organization composed of Bretons and friends of Brittany dedicated to promoting the region of Brittany, France. Brittany, former independent kingdom and duchy, is a province of France since 1532. Brittany is one of the six Celtic Nations.
This year’s event will focus on musical exchange of traditional and contemporary cultures between Brittany and India with jazz as a horizon. This mixing of cultures based on exchange and improvisation will offer opportunities of exploration and artistic expression among the 5 talented musicians coming from Brittany and locally based Indian (Gargi Shinde & Naren Budhkar on tabla) and jazz musicians. Sylvain Barou, Ronan Pellen, Ndiaz (Yann LeCorre, Youen LeCam, Jean Marie Nivaigne) are experts of Breton music but also multi-instrumentalist who are frequently exploring, performing celtic and world musics.

St. Yves day has become in recent years a date on the calendar where Bretons everywhere celebrate Brittany and all things Breton. This year will be no different with over 200 events organized worldwide. 2011 will mark the 5th year Breton events are celebrated in NY to celebrate St Yves. Last year’s NY events were centered on honoring Breton artist Youenn Gwernig. A poetry reading of Youenn’s works in English, Breton, and French, a documentary in Breton on his life shown at NYU and a concert.
The line up of the musicians is the same as at The Shrine.

The 1990s downtown New York aesthetic, turned on its ear. Flat Earth Society, hailing from Belgium, has every bit of the circusy, genre-jumping, soundtrack-esque, Raymond Scott–like, smirky moodiness that characterizes the Knitting Factory diaspora. Where that sound can sometimes turn snarky and sarcastic, the group wisely remains earnest and open, though they are sometimes too clever for unqualified endorsement. The 15-strong band, weighted toward lower horns and brass, is punchy and dynamic, playfully romping through clarinetist and leader Peter Vermeersch’s charts.

Ustad Faiyaz Wasifuddin Dagar represents the 20th unbroken generation of dedicated dagarvani, dhrupad singers in the Dagar family. Traditionally his family has always performed dhrupad as a duet, but Wasifuddin successfully presents the dynamic of a duet in a solo performance. He is the nephew of Ustad N. Zahiruddin Dagar and son of Ustad N. Faiyazuddin Dagar, the legendary younger “Dagar Brothers”. Since the demise of his uncle Ustad N. Zahiruddin Dagar in 1994, Wasif has been carrying on the tradition of Dagarvani solo. Ustad Wasifuddin Dagar was honored by the President of India with the Padma Shri award in 2010. The Padma Shri is the fourth highest civilan award in India.

The special opening guest is Rachelle Garniez who’s born in New York City. She’s a performer, singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist.
Hailed by the New York Press as “one of the greatest songwriters of our time”, described by the New Yorker as “a certified free spirit with a rich voice and a wild imagination”, and featured in Paper magazine’s annual “Beautiful People 2008” issue; Garniez’s adventures began as a street musician in Europe and a fixture in the art scene of 1980’s New York City.
