Iva Bittová is a world-renowned violinist and vocalist performing at the peak of her powers. She has performed on many of the most important stages in the world including Le Botanique in Brussels; Concertgebouw in Amersterdam, Le Cigale in Paris; at the Purcell Room and Wigmore Hall in London, and at Carnegie Hall.
The great Czech novelist Milan Kundera, author of The Unbearable Lightness of Being, among many other novels, wrote of Iva Bittová, saying that her “musical worldview and visionary creativity acknowledge no borders. Her powers of spontaneous creativity are more bountiful than it is fair to confer on one person. Witness and marvel.”

Kavita Shah, a singer and composer from New York, celebrates the release of her album “Visions“. Co-produced by renowned African guitarist Lionel Loueke, Visions (available May 27 on Inner Circle Music) heralds the arrival of a strinkingly original, globally minded new voice. A self-portrait in mosaic form, Visions interweaves Shah’s multicultural background with her wide-ranging musical influences, combining the Indian tablas and West African kora with a traditional jazz quintet.
Shah will be joined by co-producer Loueke, saxophonist Greg Osby, guitarist Michael Valeanu, pianist Guy Mintus, bassist Linda Oh, drummer Guilhem Flouzat, tabla player Stephen Cellucci, kora master Yacouba Sissoko, and percussionist Rogerio Boccato.

M.A.K.U. Soundsystem comprised of 8 members, hailing mostly from Colombia, M.A.K.U. SoundSystem makes big music that begins in traditional Afro-Colombian rhythms and ends somewhere in the punk-jazz stratosphere. Clarinet, trombone, sax, guitarra, and Latin percussion supplement a rambunctious, driving rock core, creating a sound familiar enough to be danceable but always surprising.

After packing the national stadium for performances in their home country of Sierra Leone and contributing music to the Academy Award–nominated film Blood Diamond, African superstars Bajah + the Dry Eye Crew are poised to conquer the global airwaves with their international debut album (due out in fall 2009) and their unique sound, which blends the swagger and funk of hip-hop, the passion and energy of dancehall, and the socially conscious vibe of reggae. The group has generated so much buzz in the hip-hop world that major stars including ?uestlove and Black Thought of The Roots, Talib Kweli, K’Naan, Res, and El-P have contributed their vocal and/or production talents to the upcoming release, helmed by the production team Fyre Department (whose credits include 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg, GZA, Talib Kweli, Justin Timberlake). With this great collection of creatives, Bajah’s own star is rising as the Sean Paul of West Africa with the social conscience of Bob Marley and Fela Kuti.

Combining elements of rock, pop, jazz, classical and experimental music, Marta Sanchez‘s tunes are rhythmically complex but strongly melodic. Music that tell stories by integrating folk elements with the harmonic sophistication and spontaneity of jazz.
She’ll be performing with a quintet that features a number of top-flight New York-based musicians, including Roman Filiu on alto saxophone, Jerome Sabbagh on tenor saxophone, Sam Anning on bass, and Jason Burger on drums.

Terry Dame presents an ongoing monthly music series dedicated to instrument inventors and players of found objects and other musical oddities. Dame is a composer, multi-instrumentalist and instrument builder and leader of the invented instrument ensemble Electric Junkyard Gamelan. Terry Dame’s Weird Wednesdays did start on a Wednesday, but to make it weirder, it will be now happen every last Thursday of the month…because Thursday is the weirdest Wednesday of all.
This month’s episode of Weird Wednesday is dedicated to weird winds and features guest artists Stefan Zeniuk and Jessica Lurie. Stefan is, you know, the guy with the flaming baritone. He’ll be debuting his newly minted weird wind contraption the “Claribox”, a one-of-a-kind electro-acoustic sound machine, incorporating finger-percussion, various wind-resonators, a tiny synthesizer, and of course a souped-up super-clarinet. All performed within a single small box of wonders.
In addition we will be featuring wind wizard woman Jessica Lurie. Jessica will be joining me for some weird wind duets on all sorts of wind powered things manipulated with electronics, weirdness and whatnot.

The summer jazz concert season kicks off to an early start with a rousing tribute to the celebrated recording ‘New York Eye and Ear Control’ as it hits its golden anniversary. This seminal album of the Free Jazz canon was conceived by Albert Ayler and realized with an all-star ensemble of improvisers who defined the movement. Some fifty years hence, a wide swath of New York Jazz underground instrumentalists fete it with four sets of contemporary fire music. The headliners are a one-time only assemblage dubbed here as The Veterans of Free, a combo of artists who were vital parts of the scene during Free Jazz’s development and still stand now as leading figures. And the opening attraction is celebrated downtown poet Steve Dalachinsky whose mix of spoken word and improv crosses the decades. The other artists performing represent the improvisational new music sounds of the past thirty+ years heard in Manhattan and Brooklyn performance spaces right into today.
