1. VISION FESTIVAL 17
Date: Monday, June 11, 2012 through Sunday, June 17, 2012
Main venue: The Roulette (Brooklyn, NY)
The Vision Festival, which was initiated by dancer and choreographer Patricia Nicholson Parker in 1996, has established itself as one of the world’s top festival of experimental music, free jazz/avant-garde jazz, art, film and dance. It is run under the tutelage of Arts For Art, Inc. (AFA).
Inspired by the 1984 and ’88 Sound Unity Festivals, it was a direct out growth of the Improvisers Collective 1994 and ’95. Every year this festival is held in New York City in June. Members of the board of directors include following people.
Every year the festival takes place in numerous New York venues. It usually consists of between thirty and sixty performances, spread out over a number of days. But this year the main venue is the Roulette in Brooklyn. During all the years the festival has encountered difficulty booking performance spaces, largely because of the Vision Festival’s rejection of commercial sponsors. Booking difficulties are often fixed by arts-foundation grants, however. Read More
2. Bootsy Collins
Date: Wednesday, June 13 2011
Time: 8pm
Venue: B.B.KING (237 West 42 St., New York, NY 10036)
Ticket: $47
Genre: Funk
Bootsy Collins is the man who put bass in your face – the original funk ‘n’ roll wild child, the Godzilla-toned high minister of the all-powerful “one,” a sly dog who – with his trademark psychedelic stovepipe, knee-high platform boots, and star-studded bass guitars – makes the Cat in the Hat look tame. Inspired by Jimi Hendrix and tutored by no less an authority on the big beat than James Brown, Collins has stomped his way through the last 40 years of music history and lived the high life. He has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame along with the other members of Parliament-Funkadelic. And yet, after spraying outer space bass all over classic recordings by the Godfather of Soul, P-Funk, and his own trailblazing groups – including Bootsy’s Rubber Band, the Sweat Band, and Praxis – Collins has arrived at a kind of Zen-like balance that he credits for inspiring his latest album, Tha Funk Capitol of the World (2011).

And there will be two premieres of Lukas’ compositions: Tom Bergeron and Candy Chiu will give the NY premiere of “Tangle”, Lukas’ trumpet-and-percussion duo that was commissioned by Håkan Hardenberger and Colin Currie, and the Cadillac Moon Ensemble will play the world premiere of Lukas’ hot-off-the-press quartet “Conversation with I.S.”.
